Movies that were very presumptuous about getting a sequel but didn't?

Like John Carter, what are some movies that, either in the movie with hints to future events, or marketing, all but assumed they'd get sequels, but fizzled out with one movie?

The Sword and The Sorcerer specifically gives you the name of the next movie. Never made.
The fourth Matt Helm, "The Wrecking Crew" states Matt Helm will be back in "The Revengers"?, The Ravagers ? Can't remember exactly what it is. Never made.

KUNG FU CULT MASTER (1993) with Jet Li ended on a cliffhanger and was definitely made from source material that went on forever (and was made into a long TV series years earlier). The implication was that there would be a sequel and there never was.

Spin-off. Not a sequel to Daredevil.

I understand that that was based on a serialized novel which never technically finished.

I liked The Golden Compass.

I wouldn't say it ended on a cliffhanger, but it was definitely planning to continue the story.

I haven't seen it since it first came out on video and I don't remember much about it but didn't it end with them flying off in a hot air balloon looking for someone?

Another one that popped into my mind is The Last Airbender. I seem to remember that one being set up for a sequel as well.
