I still can't believe The Golden Compass beat out Transformers for the Visual Effects Academy Award.

I'm not entirely sure what that was, an attempt to set up for a sequel or just an attempt to have bizarre twist ending. It would've helped either way if it'd made sense in some fashion.

Hellboy II is wide open for a sequel that we'll probably never get .

You mean Hellboy 2: The Golden Army? I hope it happens one day.

The end of Airplane II, Making the Grade and Doctor Detroit all promised upcoming sequels that never happened.

Lots of movies were intended to be the first in a series, but having bombed in theaters all future movies were cancelled. "VI Warshawski" was one of those.

That award usually goes to what is considered the best film in the group, not necessarily the one with the best effects.

The Mask was presumed to get a sequel. A scene depicting a character's death was deleted so he/she could be brought back for the sequel, and Nintendo Power had this contest:

The novel was finished and was 41 chapters long. They just never made the sequels.

The abrupt ending of the film is due to the fact that it was originally intended to be the first part in a trilogy of films based on a lengthy Japanese novel. Nakazato Kaizan's 41 volume historical novel focused on the Edo period in Japanese history when the shogunate collapsed and a new government arose that revolved around the Emperor. It was the longest novel in Japan - encompassing 1533 chapters and over 5 and a half million Japanese characters - until the publication of Sohachi Yamaoka's serialized novel "Tokugawa Ieyasu", which is reportedly the longest novel in any language.

Since The Golden Compass was already mentioned, I'll say Eragon. Even though they butchered the book to make that movie, they still ended it with a sequel in mind. Galbatorix's revenge...

So this is now the Rag on The Golden Compass thread?

That's correct. They resolved the immediate conflict and were soaring off to the next stage of the adventure. Definitely unsatisfying, but it's not like a "dragon flying toward the town to wreak havoc" kind of ending.

Both Sum of All Fears and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit attempted to reboot the "Ryan" series.

Edited to note that Paramount also wanted to do a spin-off based off of Kevin Costner's character.

Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975). The end credits promised a sequel titled Doc Savage: The Arch Enemy of Evil.

The sad news is that "The Sword and The Sorcerer" sequel did eventually get made almost 3 decades later by the original director, Albert Pyun, and released under both the title "Abelar: Tales of an Ancient Empire" and the shorter title "Tales of an Ancient Empire" ( link ).

How bad is it? Just think "SyFy TV Movie as directed by a Uwe Boll wannabe" to get an idea of its quality. (And it further illustrates the fact that "The Sword and The Sorcerer" turning out pretty good was just a "one good movie in him" fluke by Albert Pyun.)

A trailer for "Tales of an Ancient Empire"

I really thought they would make a sequel to The Matrix.
That movie was awesome, and a sequel or two might have been awesome, too.
