In MISTRESS AMERICA, Tracy (Lola Kirke) is a lonely college freshman in New York, having neither the exciting university experience nor the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she envisioned. But when she is taken in by her soon-to-be stepsister, Brooke (Greta Gerwig) – a resident of Times Square and adventurous gal about town – she is rescued from her disappointment and seduced by Brooke's alluringly mad schemes.

That would be a departure, now wouldn't it. Even more of a departure if Noah Baumbach was involved.
Oh...wait a second...

A legit question, and not just bitching/bashing: do Baumbach's movies vary in tone/quality, or does he go for that same airy, quirky, preciously twee dryness in every film? Because I've only seen one, and I wanted to strangle every last motherfucker involved with the production of Greenberg -- every indie film trope/cliche imaginable, all in a bowl.

That's mostly the reason for my comment, he's all about that same airy, quirky, preciously twee dryness in his films. I liked it okay with Francis Ha, and to a lesser extent with Greenberg. But you've seen one, you've seen the extent of his writing/directing style. And now that he's been dating Greta Gerwig, expect her to be front and center in all of his future projects. Or so it seems.

Baumbach and Anderson really need to change it up.

You guys are high, Frances Ha is great. Its Baumbach's best film. I'm stoked they're collaborating again.

Does she play a manic pixie dream girl in this?

Guess no one saw this and those who did didn't really care for it, but I loved it.

I saw in theatres a while back. I thought it was OK. A little manic... I thought Lola Kirke was great.

I watched this tonight and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Kirke and Gerwig are great in this. 3.5/5
I didn't care for Greenberg at all. I'm going to need to Watch While We're Young now and see if it's on the Greenberg or Mistress America spectrum.

I enjoyed WWWY overall. But it goes in a random direction I wasn't expecting.
