Kenner couldn't figure out what color Luke's lightsaber was in the original Star Wars film so they made it yellow for the figure.

Yeah, I always thought Luke's light sabre was supposed to be yellow. When I was a kid, the action figures formed my mental images of what the characters looked like. I saw the movies once in the theatre, then got the action figures, which I saw every day.

It's a little disconcerting to find out Han Solo's jacket is brown and not blue. The Kenner action figure also influenced my perception of the Hoth/Echo Base scenes in ESB. You would think the manufacturer would have put more attention to accuracy before mass producing the figures.

Why would you blame Kenner? Whatever color the costume actually was is irrelevant, in the film it appears blue.

Well then the blame should be shared between Kenner and Lucas Film for not employing better coordination between the two with regard to merchandising. They had no problem reaping the rewards of the millions made from Star Wars merchandise but they can't get be bothered to make sure goofs like this don't make it past the production phase?
I always though that Han Solo's jacket being blue was a subtlety that signfied royalty, which implied that, despite Han being a scoundrel, deep down he was capable of being more than he was, that he was meant for something better in life. The color blue also coincides with the color of the Jedi lightsabers which represents the good, the opposite of the Dark Side of the Force. Finding out his jacket was just brown slightly alters the viewing experience.
