So how much screen time did G get in this? I don't see anyone bitching about a lack of it so I'm guessing it's significant..

Has anyone timed it? I feel like we got about as much time w/ him as in the 1954 one. Maybe a bit more. Either way... any time he was on screen doing something... was totally worth your time. Probably what? 15 minutes of the G?

I went to see it again today. Just as great a second time. Can't wait to get it on disc.

And this time I noted that one of the districts destroyed by G's flame breath was Shimbashi--where I stayed for three weeks last March. Ouch!

I'm in the theater now waiting to watch it again. Only 4 people in the theater 30 minutes before showtime. Very different from last week...

UPDATE: Over 40 people ended up in the theater by showtime.

And the last 45-50 minutes of the movie was more enjoyable the 2nd time. Honestly, I thought the effects looked better in Shin Godzilla than Godzilla 2014.

Probably because G2014 raised the bar and Toho is trying to step up their game.

Re: Godzilla 2016 (TOHO) - news, rumors, cast

It didn't look better but Toho did raise their bar that was so goddamn low w/ CGI... shit... most of Japan too, I'd guess.

That effect on G when he's evolving. The ripple effect one.. that didn't look good to me. Also the buildings and their nature when going down. Debris matter, etc. They're not up to par w/ the 2014 US standards.. but... I can give them a pass cuz Japan doesn't have the structure that we do. Still... great effects though.

Hrmmmm.

I'm a bit on the eyebrow raising side with how you feel the US is portrayed. What's your context to feel that way about how the Japanese may treat the US in a film?

I gave a number of specific examples in the piece. I take issue mainly with the notion presented in the film that the U.S. would unilaterally decide that the only solution is to drop a thermonuclear bomb on one of its allies. One of the officials even calls the U.S. decision "deplorable." It seemed to me to be quite a callous decision and I think there would be a lot more debate inside the U.S. and a lot more give-and-take with Japan before such a decision is reached. That we don't see anything like that casts the U.S. in a somewhat negative light, not entirely compensated by the Japanese-American special envoy (played by a Japanese rather than a Japanese-American actress). Just an observation.

Re: Godzilla 2016 (TOHO) - news, rumors, cast

Finally saw this - a bit worried with mixed word of mouth - but really dig it despite a few slow patches. The big G is truly scary and I loved the changes to his design - the first nuclear breath scene was amazing. And I felt this offered a better window on Japanese culture than any Godzilla since the first one; I got more into the "human" scenes in this one than most other kaiju flicks. Yeah, cutting about 10 minutes of the meetings out would've made this a slightly stronger movie but otherwise excellent, the first Godzilla movie in a while where I feel like they tried something truly new.

Pretty fascinating that this won the Japanese Academy Prize for best picture (their "Oscar") - obviously struck a chord in the post-Fukushima nation.

Unfortunately in his earlier form he looked like a sock puppet rumbling through the city. I don't know why they can never get the eyes right. It took me right out of the movie. I am shocked at all the praise this has received.

I stayed away from a lot of the pre-publicity. I, too, was surprised at the ridiculous looking first form. My only problem with the adult Godzilla is the lack of movement in its face and expressions, though I kind of reconciled it as kind of a Kubuki mask (if that's the correct expression). The business with Godzilla just sitting still for a week or two while they can have committee meetings bothered me a bit.

Re: Godzilla 2016 (TOHO) - news, rumors, cast

Just watched Shin Godzilla - got it from the library and it was fantastic. It buries the 2014 American version. The 3.1 soundtrack is quite confusing, because this deserved a full surround. Granted, I watched the DVD and not the BD.

Looks like we will not get another one of these until after 2020.

Anno used a 3.1 because he wanted to emulate the original Showa era films. In fact, originally he wanted a 1.0 mono track but was talked out of it.
