Just finished the book yesterday, and I knew there was no way a movie could be 100% faithfully adapted (without paying major copyright $$) . I'm just hoping it stays with the spirit of the book and gives us some nostalgia similar to an episode of Stranger Things.

Nice, the RT score is actually going up. 78%, 82%, and now 84%. This should bring in some big money this weekend.

For anyone who has seen a screening: I don't remember the race scene in the book. I am guessing

Spoiler:
it takes the place of the Holy Grail challenge? Either that or it's meant as a cool introduction or something. I just don't see them doing the whole Holy Grail bit and it going over with mainstream audiences.

If you're a Stuckmann fan, he posted his review today. He gave it a B. This is my most anticipated movie of the year since I really enjoyed the book. I won't be able to see it for at least a week. I have to work on a morning show Thursday thru Wednesday 3AM to 1PM. I don't think I'd be able to stay awake during a showing after working those hours.....

It looks to me based on what I see in the trailer that they are racing for the copper key. Because it says it right on a scrolling panel on the side of the race in the trailer.

After watching the trailers, I've become convinced this movie will either be Spielberg at his best or at his worst...not sure which.

Steven Spielberg’s feature take on Ernest Cline’s VR YA novel Ready Player One is finally hitting planet earth over the Easter weekend and its currently eyeing a $140M-$170M global score.

Going to try to see this on Friday.

I’m not familiar at all with the source material.

I would have seen it tonight, but I’m playing tonight’s huge HQ trivia, which is being sponsored by...Ready Player One.

In the theater now. I know it’s a Wednesday but it’s only me and a friend no one else in the whole theater. We also aren’t watching in 3D so that may be why.

The movie was fun. Though it takes place so much within The Oasis it starts to feel like you’re watching an animated movie.

There is one sequence in particular that brought a huge smile to my face. And I’m sure it will to most film buffs who see it.

This is probably the most fun and enjoyment I've gotten out of a Spielberg movie since 2005.

Spoiler:
It replaces the part on ludus. There is a race instead of a quest. Almost none of the key stuff is the same and there are no gates.

Showing I was at also was mostly empty, but also was not 3D. I was surprised. The movie was entertaining but I wasnt blown away by it.
Spoiler:
The Shining
sequence was a lot of fun though.

As a stand alone movie I thought it was good. The action was good and the pop references were cool, acting was good and story was entertaining.

As someone who enjoyed the book they changed enough to disappoint me. When I am at a computer and not a phone I may type a full write up to why, but it felt like they started Wade in the middle of the book in the oasis but the start of the book in real life.

I saw it tonight and liked it quite a bit. I am not familiar with the source material. There are a ton of video game and pop culture references. I'm only a casual gamer, but I was still able to make out many of them. Although set in 2045, there is a strong nostalgia towards the 80s. I'm not sure if teenagers 20 years from now will be looking back that fondly of an era 65 years in the past (I don't think modern day teens care that much about the 50s), but whatever.

And as fun as the movie is, I never felt like the stakes were as high as the characters thought they did.

WB must have paid mega $$$ to get the rights to show so many famous characters in this movie. I know that many of them are WB-owned and I'm sure Spielberg pulled in some favours too, but still.

This was Goonies set in the modern digital age of the OASIS. I loved it and it brought back more nostalgia than Stranger Things. The only gripe is that things happen rather quickly, with very minor time references.

Re: Ready Player One (2018, D: Spielberg) S: Cooke, Sheridan, Rylance, Mendelsohn, Pe

As someone who thought the source material was fun but not really well-written, this movie was a bit of a step back. Sure, there are a ton of pop-culture references, but they are almost all (with a notable exception) as shallow as a pop-culture reference can be. If the book Ready Player One was about the fairy tale of useless pop knowledge being useful to save the world, the movie almost complete ignores that in favor of people who can talk/live pop culture in virtual reality but otherwise solve quests almost exclusively drawn from knowledge of Halliday's life. Granted, there is overlap of those pieces in the book, but it is a bit of a tonal shift when the trivia knowledge is made fairly trivial. Those changes aside, many of the bleakest elements of the story have been removed in favor of a running joke and a cutesy ending. Thankfully much of the teen angst and post-breakup-wallowing is trimmed, but in adapting for the screen, the story gets much smaller with characters that all exist in the same town and without as much of the haves-and-have-not divisions between gamers. With all of that being said, there are definitely enjoyable elements to soak in. Perhaps future viewings will help, but I'm not sure there is enough depth here to warrant them.

Gah...a single spaced block of text. Anyway, I look forward to seeing this probably on Easter Sunday.
