Disney's Dumbo (2019, D: Burton) S: Farrell, Keaton, DeVito, Green, Parker, Hobbins

Tim Burton will direct Disney's live-action Dumbo.

In the latest move by the studio as it continues to make live-action versions of its animated classics, Disney has tapped the Big Eyes helmer to take on the tale of a baby circus elephant who is made fun for his large ears, based on the 1941 iconic film.

As THR exclusively reported, Transformers franchise writer Ehren Kruger penned the script. The film will be a mix of CG and live-action to bring the classic elephant story to life, and will add a unique family story that parallels Dumbo's journey. Justin Springer, who worked on Tron: Legacy as well as Oblivion, is producing with Kruger.

Disney's latest live-action makeover Cinderella, starring Lily James, opens this weekend. The studio has had strong success with its live-action versions, including Burton's reimagined Alice in Wonderland, which grossed a staggering $1.02 billion. And after Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic villainess, opened in May 2014, it went on to earn a stunning $758.4 million worldwide.

Burton, who is currently working on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, is repped by WME.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news of Burton's attachment.

Yeah, I know there are plenty of Burton-haters out there, but this sounds really interesting to me.

I just want you all to take a moment to ponder this:
Burton's reimagined Alice in Wonderland, which grossed a staggering $1.02 billion.
That movie was TERRIBLE. It's the only movie I turned off because it was so bad (literally the only one in all my years of watching movies). Made it about 80 minutes in. What the fuck is wrong with audiences that THAT flick would make so much money? I don't know anyone who likes it or praises it either. It popped up, made a billion dollars, and disappeared. Such a shitty movie.

Maleficent made over $750 million worldwide.

Don't expect an end to this kind of thing anytime soon.

Robert Downey Jr. has been planning his Pinocchio adaptation for years.

What we really need is a live action Lion King remake but with humans, possibly set it Nordic country.

The original Dumbo is 64 minutes long and is perfection at that length, a triumph of economical storytelling.

I'm sure Burton is ready to imprint himself all over the story, seeing it as "yet another outcast among outcasts" tale. Tack on a "parallel human family story" and... you know what, I'll just live my life happy with the original and let this thing poop in a melon.

The worst part is that Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory makes Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland look like Citizen Kane! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is damn near unwatchable!

I doubt the movie was catering to your taste. Rather than your age group, or mine for that matter. But my daughter loves the movie. So do a lot of kids. And IMO, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't bad either.

Yeah, this movie did suck ass. And my daughter didn't like it either.

"Alice in Wonderland" AND "Maleficent" were both terrible IMO. And while not based on a Disney animated film, I'd like to throw in "Oz: the Great and Powerful". SUCKED!

I would never think to adapt Dumbo to live action. Seems like an odd choice to me and with Burton behind it I'm not really sure I can get behind it. His style just doesn't seem like it would translate well to this story if you ask me. I actually didn't mind Alice in Wonderland when I first saw it but haven't felt any desire to watch it again. Never saw Maleficent but I've actually heard it wasn't that bad. The new live action Cinderella looks like shit to me though.

I actually didn't mind it. I didn't think it was a perfect film by any means but it was sort of a fun revisiting of the land of Oz.

With all the love Michael Keaton is getting, does Burton finally return to his muse?
