Who would he play? There are very few humans in the story.

Dumbo, clearly...

Some additional info from Variety:

If a deal closes, Smith would play the father of the children who develop a friendship with the lovable elephant after seeing him at the circus. Insiders also indicate that Tom Hanks has been offered a role as the villain. He may, however, choose instead to star in the upcoming World War II drama “The Grey Hound.”

Maybe he'll be playing the main character in the parallel human story they're planning. Hell, Smith could bring his real life family to star along side him. We all love when that Smith family takes over a movie.

Sounds like they are diverting a long way from the animated movie. Most of these Disney knock offs have hued really close to the original.

This is a Tim Burton re-imagining, after all.

I'm sure Danny Elfman's zany version of "Baby Mine" will be great. I always thought it needed more slide whistles!

No "dark and gritty" Dumbo = no sale. Also not in unless Johnny Depp plays Dumbo.

Is this a joke? lol...yeah, Burton directed a billion dollar film....7 yr ago....and almost nobody liked it, killed a brand...and the sequel tanked. So, let's give him another shot...with another falling star? Makes no sense....

The billion dollar film part makes some sense.

But yeah, not really interested in Burton doing his shtick with this property.

Sounds about as good as Tim Burton's Superman.

re: Disney's Dumbo (2019, D: Burton) S: Farrell, Keaton, DeVito, Green, Parker, Hobbins

So, I guess Green is officially the new Lisa Marie Helena Bonham Carter.

EXCLUSIVE: Eva Green is in talks to star in Tim Burton’s Dumbo, the live-action adaptation of the 1941 animated classic for Disney. Sources tell me she’s being eyed for one of the three main adult roles in the title, which is edging closer and closer towards a production start.

A Green-Burton reunion would make a lot of sense given the sizzling actress seems to be the director’s new muse, and Burton has a habit of working again and again with actors he likes. Green played the title character in Burton’s family fantasy Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, based on the novel by Ransom Riggs. It grossed $297.4M worldwide last year. She also starred in Burton’s vampire comedy Dark Shadows alongside Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer, which generated $254.5M worldwide in 2012.

The live-action remake of Dumbo is written by Ehren Kruger, who produces with Justin Springer (Tron: Legacy). Disney’s original version focused on a big-eared, lovable circus elephant, who is mocked for his large ears but learns to use them as wings to fly.

It’s the latest in Disney’s long line of reboots: This month, the studio is set to release a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson, Luke Evans and Dan Stevens, and Emma Stone is set to star as villainess Cruella De Vil in the upcoming 101 Dalmatians. The studio has had huge success with reinventions of classic animated fares like Angelina Jolie starrer Maleficent and Johnny Depp’s Alice In Wonderland, the latter of which was directed by Burton. Those pics earned $758.5M and $1.02B worldwide respectively. Its 2015 reboot of Cinderella starring Lily James took $543.5M worldwide.

Green has been hugely in-demand lately. After a successful run on Showtime’s psychological thriller series Penny Dreadful, the French actress starred in Miss Peregrine and then worked with Roman Polanski on his latest title Based on a True Story, which is currently in post. She’s also starred alongside Alicia Vikander, Charles Dance and Charlotte Rampling in Lisa Langseth’s Euphoria, about two sisters who meet up again after many years apart and the profound journey that they undertake together.

Green is also attached to star with Gemma Arterton in Vita and Virginia, a title which looks at the love affair between Virginia Woolf (Green) and Vita Sacksville-West (Arterton). But word is that should the Dumbo deal make, dates for that title will have to be shifted.

Green is repped by UTA in the U.S. and Tavistock Wood in the UK.

When Operation Dumbo Drop (1995) came out, Michael Medved (or was it Jeffrey Lyons?) said the movie should've been called Operation Dumbo Droppings. Apparently a lot of scatological humor.

Didn't the elephant Shep in Disney's George of the Jungle punish the bad guys, while they were caged, by

super-soaker peeing on them?

So don't be surprised if Dumbo's leavings are used for cannonballs. It's pooptastic fun for the whole family.

re: Disney's Dumbo (2019, D: Burton) S: Farrell, Keaton, DeVito, Green, Parker, Hobbins

EXCLUSIVE: Danny DeVito is negotiating to join Tim Burton’s circus in Disney’s live-action rendering of Dumbo which is casting up now. DeVito is trying to work out schedules on his Broadway turn to join Eva Green in the story of the beloved baby circus elephant with the big, floppy ears.

If things work out, DeVito would play Medici, the man who runs a smaller circus that gets acquired by the evil big top circus villain Vandemere. Others involved in the picture say that DeVito’s deal is pretty much closed.

The live-action adaptation of the 1941 animated classic, scripted by Ehren Kruger who produces with Justin Springer, is barreling towards a production start. Eva Green is already in talks to take on the role Colette, a French trapeze artist who works for Vandemere and is a key role in the film.

DeVito, who began his acting career doing several off-Broadway productions including Shakespeare in the Park, has been on stage in recent months having joined the cast of The Price, the Roundabout Theater Company revival of the 1968 Arthur Miller drama. The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor and The Comedian co-star is repped by CAA and Behr Abramson Levy.

Well, he's a lot cheaper to get than Will Smith (who reportedly wanted $20M).

Closest I can think of is the Ringmaster abusing the elephants.

So far the only live action version I liked was Jungle Book and that was live in action in the sense they filmed a young boy. Everything else was CGI.
