Movies where you Can't Handle the Ending

Re: Movies where you Can't Handle the Ending
I stand by my choice. To me the ending used in the film is IMO cliched. Seems like Besson wrote the film with a European audience in mind and wound up having to "Hollywoodize" it a bit.

I think Leon works better in its "edited" form. He's very childlike and she is taking on an adult "pursuer" role. He's clueless on how to deal with taking care of a a young girl/someone else, & and she's enamored with the only person who hasn't treated her like shit.

A trick which Besson would use over and over and over again in a lot of his scripts going forward.

You're right. My "almost out of nowhere" wording was a little too strong. And I do agree about the thing in your first spoiler tag.

We'll just have to agree to disagree I guess. The existing ending has the most layers and nuance of all the options, in my opinion. I can see aspects of it feeling somewhat cliched though.

The Leon debate reminds me of the anime/manga Usagi (Bunny) Drop, where the anime ends at just the right point, because the true manga ending turns a heartwarming story into a story of
The Happening wasn't a great movie by any means but the ending was terrible. Though I guess you can say that about a lot of M Knight movies and their twists, notably the Village.

I know a lot of people who refuse to ever watch The Mist again because of the ending. Personally, I love it.

Falling Down. I loved it until the end. I can't stand that they reduced Michael Douglas' character to a deranged abusive ex-husband/father. Definitively painting him as a bad guy ruined the whole movie for me.

If he had just killed some pimps and rescued a 12 year old prostitute like Travis Bickle he would be a hero.

Ending didn't work for me because the director failed with passage of time. Watching the movie, it seems almost like he drives for 5 minutes, stops and that's that.

Argo - the Airplane car chase took me out of the film...
LA Confidential - I liked it until we found out

Can't handle the truth...can't handle the ending.
The ONLY reason Nicholson's character goes to jail is because he's stupid enough to blurt out what he did, despite being cool and collective up until that point in the film. It's like a bad episode of Matlock in an otherwise good flick.

^ Yes. The ending completely falls apart. Might has well have him wring his hands and say "And I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those kids!"

I don't care if he's rational and sane or not, I just didn't want him to be evil. I liked the movie when he was just a normal guy who snaps because he can't take all the bullshit anymore and starts acting out. But when he turns out to be a violent narcissist of the Sleeping with the Enemy variety, it undermines all the biting social commentary the film had - up till then - established. It's like for the first two acts, the film is like Network or American Beauty, and then for the last act, devolves into a bad Lifetime woman-in-peril thriller.

Another one for me: Hitch. I found it to be a pleasant enough romantic comedy up until the end. I can't stand how when Eva Mendes discovers that Will Smith is the date doctor guy that she somehow thinks it's okay to wantonly blow up two innocent people's lives out of spite. And then the part that really pissed me off: the onus is on him to apologize to her. Her behavior was so outrageous and showed her to be so selfish and vindictive (whether she later regretted it or not), that he really needed to cut her loose. With that final reveal, I really wanted a Gone with the Wind type of ending.
