Anastasia (1997)

I just finished revisiting Anastasia on BD. I must have watched the movie a lot back in the day because, for a movie I've not seen in 18 years, I remembered the whole thing by heart. From the dialogue, melodies, song lyrics, and even the gestures the characters would make. I was also pleased to see that it has held up after all these years. A very charming movie.

... I didn't like it as a kid. Hell... I don't even remember that there was singing. I remember the basic plot cuz it is what it is. I'll need to revisit it. US BD?

Yes, US BD. I got it for $5 at Amazon. Although it's currently $9.96.

Yeah, I never liked it. My daughter however - well, she didn't like it either. She didn't ask me to buy it, so that's a definite sign.

Is this a prequel to 50 SHADES OF GREY? -confused-

I remember watching it once, way back when. Ambitious but leaning way too hard on the Disney beats. I'll have to check it out one day.

Well the real Anastasia was gunned down and then bayoneted. So, um, yes?

I just noticed it's on Netflix. Which seems par for the course with movies I own on BD.

I thought it was the animated equivalent of a summer blockbuster: enjoyable but not fulfilling.

love the music and songs!

Yeah, I like the music, and I'm a fan of Liz Callaway, the singing voice of Anastasia. But I remember the rest as being fairly meh, especially the villainous sidekick. I think I might have liked it better without the fantastical elements.

Bartok? yeah he was annoying.

he had his own 1999 movie
Bartok the Magnificent

Re: Anastasia (1997)

Bartok never bothered me because he's barely in the movie and he's really just there to give the youngest audience members something to giggle at. Honestly, you can cut Bartok and Rasputin out of the movie completely and the movie wouldn't suffer one bit from it. You'd only need to rework the train sequence, the sleepwalking scene, and the ending just a bit but the bulk of the movie would be unaffected.

The Bartok movie went straight to DVD. I never saw it but it's included on the BD. I may check it out eventually.

Bought this on BD for cheap a few years ago based on a friend's vehement recommendation, still have yet to see it. Maybe soon. I also have a 35 mm trailer of it.

I remember my brother giving me so much shit because I wanted to see this on opening weekend instead of Starship Troopers.

The soundtrack is pretty good and the animation holds up, but I still think it's mediocre overall. More original than Thumbelina (which was trying so desperately to emulate classic Disney, but lacked any of the spark), but pretty forgettable compared to Bluth's '80s output.
