Re: Performances that were all hype?

stvn1974 will find a way to rip on Christopher Nolan, directly or otherwise, every single chance he has. It's exhausting.

Re: Performances that were all hype?

I've seen ENTIRELY more obsessive fixation and one-note pontificating on Nolan from stvn1974 than from any so-called "Nolanite/Nolan Fanboy"...

I'll take Lawrence over the very robotic Chastain any day of the week. I don't know what people see in her.

Yeah, like any of us would go to a Nolan movie without knowing ahead of time who directed it!

Yeah, it's amazing to directly compare Al Pacino's superb performances in the 1970s to his mostly over-the-top, scene-chewing performances from later in his career. When was the "shark jump" in his acting anyway? Scarface in the '80s? Or sooner?

Re: Performances that were all hype?

*insert any good actor that won an Oscar after being snubbed giving a better performance*

There's no other reason why Russell Crowe was nominated and won for Gladiator.

All of these films were after Scarface and he was good in all of them. Some of the acting was even restrained.

1992 Glengarry Glen Ross
1993 Carlito's Way
1997 Donnie Brasco
1999 The Insider
2002 Insomnia
2004 The Merchant of Venice
2010 You Don't Know Jack

He has an upcoming film directed by David Gordon Green that looks interesting.

Re: Performances that were all hype?

All the stuff mentioned is exactly why I do not watch the Oscars (or any award shows for that matter) and pay no attention to them. It pains me that I have friends who have to go see every movie and performance nominated just so they can talk about the Academy Awards the next day. They make excuses for shit movies and performances all the time just because "it got nominated."

Ugh. Irritating.

Re: Performances that were all hype?

A lot of Christian Bale performances. He has the odd stand out, but most of the time i find his acting cut and paste with little range.

Agreed. He just set the bar so high in the '70s, and the films were so iconic, that I don't even think comparisons to his later work are fair.

I said "mostly" over-the-top, scene-chewing performances, not "all" of them. (And you omitted Heat from your list, which I thought was one of the good Al Pacino performances.)

In the 1970s, he never had cheeseball performances (at least that I know of), so my question is: which one was first?

Was it Scarface in 1983? Or was there an earlier one?

Alan Rickman - Die Hard
Anthony Hopkins - Silence Of The Lambs
Robert Deniro - Cape Fear
Jack Nicholson - The Shining
Jack Nicholson - Batman
YES - Robert Deniro - Taxi Driver
MAYBE - Marlon Brando - Apocalypse Now
YES - Jack Nicholson - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
MAYBE - Alan Rickman - Die Hard
YES - Anthony Hopkins - Silence Of The Lambs
YES - Robert Deniro - Cape Fear
YES - Jack Nicholson - The Shining
NO! - Jack Nicholson - Batman

About just the last one: are you fuckin' kidding with that? Jack Nicholson was doing nothing more than just playing himself under some good makeup, while throwing in a "hoo-hoo", a "ha-ha", and a "he-he" every once and a while. Sorry, but he actually sucked as the Joker. Jack Nicholson's extremely overrated performance in Batman is one of the reasons why a thread like this even exists!

(BTW, if you truly think it was a "good" performance, just go back and watch the performance closely to see if it's anything more than what I said above)
