Deepwater Horizon (2016, D: Peter Berg) S: Mark Wahlberg
Peter Berg is in final negotiations to replace J.C. Chandor as the director of “Deepwater Horizon,” which will star Mark Wahlberg, TheWrap has learned.
While there are no deals in place, Berg’s “Battleship” star Liam Neeson and Oscar frontrunner Michael Keaton are being sought to co-star in the picture, which Chandor left due to creative differences.
Lionsgate and Participant Media are teaming with Lorenzo di Bonaventura on the project, which is scheduled for for release on Sept. 30, 2016.
“Deepwater Horizon” chronicles the 2010 BP oil spill. Wahlberg will play Mike Williams, the supervisor on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
Berg will reteam with Matthew Michael Carnahan on the project, having previously worked together on “The Kingdom.” Berg also has a strong relationship with Wahlberg coming off of “Lone Survivor.”
Berg is represented by WME, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I enjoyed Lone Survivor a lot but Berg really is a mediocre filmmaker. His name doesn't guarantee a movie will be bad but it certainly doesn't help.

It involves a large explosion?
Something similar has been done well before, but not as a Hollywood film:

I don't know about calling them "heroes". But I don't know enough about the story to judge.

In the real world, there was an explosion or a fire every week or so on oil platforms in US waters in the Gulf. But nobody cared. It was business as usual.
After the explosion was the technical job of gluing the hole closed, and the legal job of everybody filing lawsuits.
I don't see the dramatic potential. It sounds like a PBS television documentary.

I'm not convinced, but I give Peter Berg a lifetime pass for making the best sports movie ever made.

Can't believe (figuratively speaking) that they actually made a movie about it. Hollywood is the new Lifetime of world events.

This movie strikes me as one of those religious type films completely financed by Kurt Cameron... that just happens to be starring Mark Wahlberg.

Yeah that comment doesn't make any sense to me either.

I hope they cover the heroic use of Corexit.

I get it. He's saying that the tone and style appears to be like one of those church-funded movies. You can't deny those flicks have an identifiable style.
Do you guys have those where you're at? God's Not Dead was a popular one that ended up getting a wide release (or close to it). Probably one a month gets released.
I can see it, though I don't really agree.

Didn't realize Pete Berg also directed the upcoming Patriot's Day. He and Mark Wahlberg really seem to be jumping all over these true stories - including Lone Survivor.

When the voice-over mentions things like "raises the human spirit", etc... just feels hokey and forced.
