Re: Why is American Sniper such a hit?
Again, it's probably a cultural commonality. Just as countless Westerns have evil Indians, Zulu has evil dark-skinned savages, kung-fu films about invading Mongols, or Japanese films which depict the Chinese as evil, it's not a new phenomenon. I agree with your point that it taps into negative stereotypes and cultural attitudes, and you are right that many people are right to criticize it and point out any falsehoods it depicts.

Re: Why is American Sniper such a hit?
I've had some thought to put this into reasoning but the thing that irks me is that certain things about it's fictitious nature should be questioned.
I haven't read up on it but... wtf has the wife said about the BS the film showed? She may have loved her husband and all that but... if my spouse was being promoted in a film for something he wasn't or didn't do... shouldn't I get angry? Yeah, like his VS. against Mustafa was cool but... it's not real. Some bits w/ religious dad and such.. wasn't true. Some very big impactful moments for the character that are entirely false. Did she go like Linda Lee and just get her paycheck and just shut the fuck up to ride the trails of her dead husband's life? And especially considering that the film showed actual footage of the drive to the funeral or whatever... only ingrains that what we say was Kyle's life.
That bothers me a lot. Yeah, Kyle was apparently a bullshitter on his life but if it was a(n) (as straight as can be) adaptation of it... it wouldn't annoy me as such. Even more so how this is all rather recent too.
Just.... Irks me a lot.
