13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016, D: Michael Bay)

With the “Transformers” franchise behind him, Michael Bay is already targeting production on his next film.

Sources tell Variety that John Krasinski is in talks to star in Paramount’s “13 Hours,” which has Bay directing and is based on the true story recounting the attack on the U.S. Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA Annex in Benghazi, Libya, on the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11.

Krasinski will play one of the lead roles, a Navy SEAL, in the real-life thriller.

Chuck Hogan penned the script based on Mitchell Zuckoff’s book “Thirteen Hours: A Firsthand Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi,” to which Paramount acquired rights in February before it was published. Erwin Stoff produces through 3 Arts Entertainment’s production shingle.

Several had actors had been reading for roles in the film, including Woody Harrelson, J.K. Simmons, Walton Goggins and Shea Whigham, but sources say it was Krasinski who blew Bay away with an early meeting for one of the starring roles.

Following the end of his hit TV show “The Office,” Krasinksi has been patient in finding his next project and in the past had normally not gone after tentpole pics like this, preferring prestige films like “Promised Land” and the Sam Mendes movie “Away We Go.”

Krasinski can be seen next in the untitled Cameron Crowe pic starring Emma Stone and Bradley Cooper. He is repped by WME.

Zero Dark Thirty filled my need for watching this type of stuff. Besides, the last thing I need is to watch this type of movie with whizzing in circles camera shots during the attack. No thanks.

Re: 13 Hours (D: Michael Bay)

Confirming the news Deadline reported back in April, Paramount said today that its Benghazi drama 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi will land in theaters January 15, 2016 during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

Based on the nonfiction book 13 Hours: The Inside Account Of What Really Happened In Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff, the story tracks the September 11-12, 2012 attack on the U.S. Diplomatic compound in Benghazi that took the lives of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith, as well as the adjacent attack on a nearby facility in which two CIA contractors were killed. The book doesn’t really get into the myriad conspiracy theories surrounding the attacks, instead offering a minute-by-minute look at events. Zuckoff drew from accounts by several CIA contractors.

Directed by Michael Bay from a script by Chuck Hogan (The Strain), 13 Hours is produced by Erwin Stoff. It stars James Badge Dale, John Krasinski, Toby Stephens, Pablo Schreiber, Max Martini, David Denman, Dominic Fumusa and Freddie Stroma.

They don't appear to be acknowledging nor validating the conspiracy-theorist d-bags.

At least it doesn't scream American jingoism (it doesn't pummel) but can't help feel Bay wanted to make his own "American Sniper." This will most likely make money but the conspiracy douche nozzles will be surprised when none of their theories are expanded on in the film. Oh, and Chuck Hogan (The Strain Trilogy) wrote it, so that's a good thing.

Hrmm? I know nothing of the event so I'm in the dark about all this. Do tell, sir.

Talking about the film, I kind of sorta want to see this.

Democrats: We're gonna say it was because of one thing when we really don't know, but we can correct ourselves later.

Sane Republicans: This was preventable, there was a lack of security, that's inexcusable - and you don't have your facts straight over what happened.

Further right...: They wanted this to happen, there were teams ready to go in and they were told to stand down.
... Further right: Weapons cover up! Marijuana is a cover up! Syria is a cover up!
... ...Further right: Obama and Hillary set this up and watched it happen to get (one of the involved) kidnapped to do a prisoner swap to purposely let a terrorist out!

Basically, standard accusations to attempt to win the next presidential bid. It backfired, huge, for a good number of people -- and others are soaking up every word of it. Had they stopped at the "the lack of security was unacceptable" then they would have looked a lot better.

Bay's far-right politics and fetishization of the military aside, I don't think his aesthetic would be suited to anything at all serious, especially as regards violence. His action sequences have to look "cool," and a gritty look at real-life combat is anything but that.

I'm ashamed to admit that I'm so goddamn ignorant that I hardly know anything about the corresponding real-life event at all.

Anyone excited for this next weekend? Michael Bay gets political and I am stoked. I hope for lots of good action and a good feeling of American exceptionalism.

No, not at all. But if the reviews are good and Bay doesn't bastardize the account like he did with Pearl Harbor, then I'll watch it. Chances of that are nil I would think since it is Michael Bay.

Arclight sent members a special link/email for an early wednesday showing but I didn't want to pay for it. I'll watch it when it hits BD (Redbox it) but am not anxious to see this in theaters anyhow.

Re: 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016, D: Michael Bay)

I saw a tv spot for this a few weeks ago and initially thought it could make a very compelling movie, then I saw it was a Bay film and immediately lost interest. I don't care about his politics, but I certainly don't want to see a "Michael Bay" style movie of this event.

It doesn't appear to be a sleeper hit like some might have hoped. Around 50% on RT. The critics do say that the action is pretty good at least.
