The Big Short (2015, D: McKay) S: Bale, Gosling, Pitt, Carell, Tomei
Following the success of “Moneyball,” Brad Pitt and his Plan B shingle have assembled an all-star cast for the next adaptation of a Michael Lewis bestseller. Sources tell Variety that Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling have come on board to star in “The Big Short,” Paramount and Plan B’s adaptation of the Lewis book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine” that Adam McKay is writing. The nonfiction novel tells the story of the build-up of the housing and credit bubble during the 2000s that led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010. Paramount had no comment. Pitt will produce with DeDe Gardner through their Plan B banner. Whether McKay is also directing is unknown, as is when production will begin. The book follows several key people who played a role in building the disastrous credit bubble. The feature adaptation will likely feature several a-list actors who have similiar-sized roles a la “Traffic” or “The Counselor.” Similar to “Moneyball,” Pitt has been very passionate about getting this adaptation onto the big screen. His Plan B company has emerged as quite the contender in serious dramas that tackle important issues, with “12 Years a Slave” landing last year’s best picture Oscar and its film “Selma” deep in the Oscar race this year. Pitt, who is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment, was last seen in “Fury.” The WME-repped Bale was last seen in “Exodus: Gods and Kings” and will shoot the Travis McGee pic “The Deep Blue Goodby” this spring. Gosling just wrapped production on the Warner Bros. thriller “Nice Guys.” He is repped by Anonymous Content. |

BREAKING: Paramount Pictures has sprung a surprise new entry into the awards season mix, setting the Adam McKay-directed adaptation of the Michael Lewis book The Big Short to be AFI’s closing night gala film on November 12 before it opens limited on December 11 and goes wide December 23. That adds another film to what is shaping up to be the most competitive year end movie market in recent memory. |

He's an alright director. He doesn't really do much to be overly unique. I do enjoy some of his films though. More for things that are beyond his direction though.

I really enjoyed this, and I think Carell will get nominated for an Academy Award for his role.
I found that the moments where they cut away to have celebs explain a term to the audience in a "dumbed-down" way was unique, and funny. Also, I think it helped drive home the sheer insanity of the sleezy dealings that people were being taken by (and still are). I'm not sure how much of the film is truth, and what has been twisted for the film, but overall it worked, and certainly enlightened/angered me (while making me laugh as well). |

liked it. didn't love it. thought the performances were very good and i think Carell with get the Oscar for this, but some of it just fell short for me. wasn't gung ho about it and the story didn't click with me since i wasn't caught up in it, luckily...

I loved it.
The style was a little odd at first, but once I got into it, I just wanted more. Both Bale and Carrell deserve recognition for their parts. Truly inspired performances. |

130 minutes felt like three hours... it felt like all the actors were hamming one each other up --- I dragged two other family members to this, I actually apologized to them for me picking this one to inflict on them.

I thought it was really solid. Kind of a weird film. Breaking the fourth wall seemed odd and disconcerting every time they did it (and they did it a LOT). Still I thought it was an interesting, complex story that was pretty well told. Thought Bale and Carell were great. Got a little confused towards the end :

As nice a job as McKay did explaining the set-up, I think they glossed over the complications of the end-game way too much. Guess I need to read the book now to understand it a little clearer. |

Well those are kind of big points to leave the theater confused about. I liked the movie but wish I understood some of the finer points better.
And not just little details : even after watching the whole thing I'm still not 100% certain what these "swaps" they were buying actually were -- insurance policies? Bonds? Funds? And are lots of other people also buying them as the crash is approaching? Is that the point of the scene with Spoiler:
Can someone help me out about that? |

Ugh, I'm going to see this tomorrow and the person I'm going with isn't really a movie watcher. She's going to come out even more confused than I am. It was between this and Joy. Maybe I'll change it to Joy.
