The Big Short (2015, D: McKay) S: Bale, Gosling, Pitt, Carell, Tomei

Following the success of “Moneyball,” Brad Pitt and his Plan B shingle have assembled an all-star cast for the next adaptation of a Michael Lewis bestseller.

Sources tell Variety that Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling have come on board to star in “The Big Short,” Paramount and Plan B’s adaptation of the Lewis book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine” that Adam McKay is writing.

The nonfiction novel tells the story of the build-up of the housing and credit bubble during the 2000s that led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010. Paramount had no comment.

Pitt will produce with DeDe Gardner through their Plan B banner. Whether McKay is also directing is unknown, as is when production will begin.

The book follows several key people who played a role in building the disastrous credit bubble. The feature adaptation will likely feature several a-list actors who have similiar-sized roles a la “Traffic” or “The Counselor.”

Similar to “Moneyball,” Pitt has been very passionate about getting this adaptation onto the big screen.

His Plan B company has emerged as quite the contender in serious dramas that tackle important issues, with “12 Years a Slave” landing last year’s best picture Oscar and its film “Selma” deep in the Oscar race this year.

Pitt, who is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment, was last seen in “Fury.” The WME-repped Bale was last seen in “Exodus: Gods and Kings” and will shoot the Travis McGee pic “The Deep Blue Goodby” this spring.

Gosling just wrapped production on the Warner Bros. thriller “Nice Guys.” He is repped by Anonymous Content.

Hrmmmm. I don't care for the subject matter but... that's an interesting trio.

BREAKING: Paramount Pictures has sprung a surprise new entry into the awards season mix, setting the Adam McKay-directed adaptation of the Michael Lewis book The Big Short to be AFI’s closing night gala film on November 12 before it opens limited on December 11 and goes wide December 23. That adds another film to what is shaping up to be the most competitive year end movie market in recent memory.

Seems like the flip side of Wolf of Wall Street. Or Wolf of Wall Street with a conscience.

I hear Alexander Payne & David O. Russell are jealous.

Not very interested in the subject matter but great cast and I like McKay as a director.

He's an alright director. He doesn't really do much to be overly unique. I do enjoy some of his films though. More for things that are beyond his direction though.

It's funny, it looks just like a David O. Russell film, lol.

Ah, I forgot he was busy making that new one about mops with J-Law, that will surely net her another Oscar nomination for an overwhelmingly average performance.

Bump for the release this week. Currently 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_...contentReviews

I think I will try and check this out sometime before Christmas Day.

I really enjoyed this, and I think Carell will get nominated for an Academy Award for his role.

I found that the moments where they cut away to have celebs explain a term to the audience in a "dumbed-down" way was unique, and funny. Also, I think it helped drive home the sheer insanity of the sleezy dealings that people were being taken by (and still are).

I'm not sure how much of the film is truth, and what has been twisted for the film, but overall it worked, and certainly enlightened/angered me (while making me laugh as well).

I recommend the book. All of Michael Lewis' books are very smooth reads and he keeps the topic interesting.

liked it. didn't love it. thought the performances were very good and i think Carell with get the Oscar for this, but some of it just fell short for me. wasn't gung ho about it and the story didn't click with me since i wasn't caught up in it, luckily...

I loved it.
The style was a little odd at first, but once I got into it, I just wanted more.
Both Bale and Carrell deserve recognition for their parts. Truly inspired performances.

130 minutes felt like three hours... it felt like all the actors were hamming one each other up --- I dragged two other family members to this, I actually apologized to them for me picking this one to inflict on them.

I thought it was really solid. Kind of a weird film. Breaking the fourth wall seemed odd and disconcerting every time they did it (and they did it a LOT). Still I thought it was an interesting, complex story that was pretty well told. Thought Bale and Carell were great. Got a little confused towards the end :
Spoiler:
Didn't really understand why everyone who bet against the housing market was freaking out when the banks went under. I thought that would be good for them but apparently it was terrible for them.

As nice a job as McKay did explaining the set-up, I think they glossed over the complications of the end-game way too much.

Guess I need to read the book now to understand it a little clearer.

Wow. Did we watch the same film?

Spoiler:
It was phenomenal for them, financially. But, Brad Pitt's character said it best when he told the two young guys to stop dancing. They were right, but it meant that a LOT of peoples' lives were going to be ruined. I'm not convinced that the real-life people felt so much... empathy, but  it's a movie. It needed to take a moral high ground.

If you mean, when they're worried about NOT getting the money owed to them for being right, well... if they waited too long to cash out, there wouldn't be any money left to get paid.

Not Brad Pitt's moral argument. That was easy to understand (and I'm glad it was said - it's not all about getting rich at others' expense).
I was referring to
Spoiler:
Steve Carell finding out that Morgan Stanley owned the shares or something , and he kind of worked for Morgan but didn't (that was confusing) and all the agony that both he and the two young guys who work with Pitt had over cashing out. There was one scene where one of Carell's guys is asking him to take like 30 cents on the dollar and cash out and he is stubbornly refusing and I'm not really understanding either side of the argument or what's at stake.
Were they actually in danger of holding worthless paper bonds if the banks failed?
I guess they were kind of buying insurance from the banks and if the banks went under, they wouldn't get paid even though they were correct? Is that right? If so, how come nobody thought about it until it happened (except Bale's character at the beginning and he was assured that wouldn't be a problem; there was some sort of a guarantee)

Oh okay, right.

Spoiler:
I have no earthly idea. Honestly, I kind of missed what was going on with that specific detail. My understanding was just that, if these companies truly tanked, there'd be no way for the guys to get paid for their bets against them, even with the premiums they were paying. I'm sure it's far more complicated than that, though.

Well those are kind of big points to leave the theater confused about. I liked the movie but wish I understood some of the finer points better.
And not just little details : even after watching the whole thing I'm still not 100% certain what these "swaps" they were buying actually were -- insurance policies? Bonds? Funds?
And are lots of other people also buying them as the crash is approaching? Is that the point of the scene with

Ugh, I'm going to see this tomorrow and the person I'm going with isn't really a movie watcher. She's going to come out even more confused than I am. It was between this and Joy. Maybe I'll change it to Joy.

They were betting that one class of financial instruments were worthless and took out credit default swaps with the big banks expecting the housing market would go south. But if the housing market collapsed and took the big banks out with them, then who's going to pay on those credit default swaps?

Imagine taking a bet with someone that a casino in Vegas would go out of business, then finding out the person you made the bet with works for the casino you bet against.
