Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter (2015, d: David Zellner, s: Rinko Kikuchi)

I could have swore they made this movie before, but maybe it was just the thought that it'd make a great movie. Based on Takako Konishi, the Japanese lady that was rumored to think Fargo was real and tried to find the bag of money. No idea if it follows her story, the urban legend, or a mix of the two.

d: David Zellner
w: David Zellner, Nathan Zellner
s: Rinko Kikuchi
Rottentomatoes: 100% with 18 reviews, 7.9/10 average.
Release Date: March 13th, 2015 (Limited)

I've never heard of the writer/directors, but I like Rinko Kikuchi. Trailer looks pretty decent.

I seriously read that as David Fincher somehow. Got all excited.

I like Kinkuchi. She has such an interesting look to her.

With the cutting the way it is, I wonder if they got the rights to show clips of Fargo or not.

I was actually wondering about that too.

Re: Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter (2015, d: David Zellner, s: Rinko Kikuchi)

I missed this when it had a limited engagement back in April, but watched the Blu-Ray this past weekend. It's a super depressing film, but also an excellent one. It's heartbreaking and tragic, because we all know Kumiko's fate long before she does (I'd imagine it's pretty obvious even if you don't know the urban legend). And yet, they manage to end the film well, with
Spoiler:
a post death sequence of a no longer frost bitten Kumiko finding her treasure, and reuniting with her beloved pet rabbit, showing us she's finally at peace.
It stuck with me several days after viewing, may be my favorite movie of 2015 so far (if you can indeed call it a 2015 release)

On a side, for those curious to watch it, it'll be free on Amazon Prime starting Aug 23.
