Re: The 2015 Rank 'Em As You See 'Em Thread

Ex-Machina - Double episode of Black Mirror and just as enjoyable.
MM: Fury Road - Fun ride down Shakespeare lane.
John Wick - I was highly entertained by this.

Boyhood - Well made and an interesting look at the moments that make us who we are, even if they're occasionally a bit slight. Like watching somebody's immediate memories on playback.
Imitation Game - An entertaining look at Alan Turing's exploits during WWII.
Whiplash - Entertaining "I'm going to prove them wrong" tale, phenomenally acted and well directed.
Faults - Anchored by phenomenal acting, this is a great little "stage play" adaptable movie about cults and people slinging mind control. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and directed by her husband.

American Sniper - Entertaining though ultimately a little empty. I liked it.
The Cobbler - I don't hate Adam Sandler. From the director of The Station Agent, this is more standard Sandler fare than indie arthouse flick, but it was oddly enjoyable if a little creepy in spots.

Birdman - I'm hesitant to give a movie this professionally made and acted a rating this low, but it simply did not engage me at all. It gets a half star bonus for being unique. I almost dozed off which is rare for me in a theater.

Vice (2015) - Like a porno without the nudity or sex. Bruce Willis must have lost a bet, makes Surrogates look like a masterpiece.

An the cinema
SPECTRE ★★★ - This movie has a spectacular pre-title sequence followed by a paint-by-numbers Bond story that is more reminiscent of Quantum of Solace than Skyfall, which is really unfortunate. I'm still ruminating over this movie and am waffling over whether or not to knock it down half a star...I definitely won't be raising the rating.
On DVD
Compliance ★★★★ - The manager of a fast food restaurant receives a phone call from a man claiming to be a policeman who accuses a young staff member of stealing from a customer. This unsettling and sometimes difficult to watch film is a re-enactment of a real life phone prank that went further than it had any right to. Director Craig Zobel and the cast do an excellent job of maintaining tension in the film and conveying some truly detestable acts without resorting to overly graphic depictions.
The 2015 film? If so, that has to be the highest rating I've seen for it.

At the cinema
Room ★★★ - a twentysomething woman tries to give her son a normal upbringing while concealing the fact that they are actually living in captivity. The main leads Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay earn every bit of the critical praise they have received going into awards season and help buoy a second half that's not nearly as gripping as the first part of the film. This movie runs just under two hours and really could have stood to lose 15 minutes or so to tighten up the story.
On DVD
Two Thumbs Up ★★★½ - a recently released convict reunites with his old gang and plans a daring heist involving a phony police van, some fake police uniforms, and a very real corpse; surprisingly, a much more vicious gang comes up with the same scheme. This offering from Hong Kong is not short on energy or imagination and absolutely refuses to take itself too seriously. This is a fun romp and will quite likely get the remake treatment in the near future.
