Ha I made a punny... or just a really obvious joke.
* Ranked by selected day. Click on the day at the top of the chart to sort by that day.
$55m, not shabby but easily the lowest opening in the franchise. By comparison:
The Hunger Games: $67.26m en route to $408m domestic
The Hunger Games - Catching Fire: $70.9m en route to $424.7m
The obviousness of the money grab may have hurt a little, who knows, but it's still a solid opening.
Friday-to-Friday:
Interstellar is down 49%, due in part to losing a chunk of those "deluxe" screens to Hunger Games (not IMAX, but the other knock offs).
Dumb and Dumber To is down 69.8% Friday-to-Friday, worth a note, Friday was its highest grossing day last week, so its drop should be around the high 50s.
Big Hero Six is down about 44%

But the fact that it made far less than the first, and coming off of good reviews on Catching Fire, is surprising. Speculation out there is Lionsgate dropped the ball in advertising.

Maybe it's just the crappy weather.

The reviews I've read for MOCKINGJAY are pretty horrible.

Deathly Hollows: Part 2, on the other hand, was the highest grossing entry in the franchise as it was literally the last Harry Potter film audiences were getting.
I assume we'll be in a similar situation for Mockingjay, but I think this will have legs as we move into Thanksgiving. It also doesn't help the northern east coast of the United States is also covered in snow at the current moment.

Remember HG opened Thursday night so many people that would have seen it Friday went the day before.

Those numbers were rolled into the opening day figure for HG. I think it's just franchise fatigue coupled with mediocre reviews and the WOM that it's half a movie with no satisfying closure.

Or maybe it is because everyone saw Jennifer Lawrence's pink taco on the internet

Probably doesn't help that everyone I know who have read the books all say the third is the most boring and worst of the trilogy.

I thought Big Hero 6's trailer was a Big Zero. It inspired no interest in myself or my 10 year boy to see it. He said that none of the kids were talking about it at school.
Why the hell was the budget $135 million? Add publicity with that and that movie is severely over budget for what it is...at least going by the shitty trailer.

All the big animated movies have mega budgets. Tangled is one of the most expensive movies of all time.

I thought Big Hero 6's trailers were excellent and won me over right away Of course, i'm not a little kid or don't have kids of my own to judge how well it marketed towards them, but the opening weekend was consistent with other Disney animated movies of late.
It's doing better then both Tangled and Wreck it Ralph at this point, so I think it will do fine overall.

1. The film was in pre-production for years. It was originally envisioned to be traditionally animated like The Princess and the Frog.
2. Disney may or may not have included upgrading the Walt Disney Animation Studios in that budget.
For Disney and PIXAR, all the 3D work is done in-house. IIRC, Tangled was the first Walt Disney Animation Studios flick where the 3D was done within the studio and not outsourced to a third-party like their past animated films.

I saw people saying they were surprised this wasn't doing better like frozen, I don't think anyone at WDA is going to be disappointed at a 200 million original animated film. Plus the merch potential of this movie is going to be high.
