Looks pretty good. I just might march down to my local theater to catch this one.
Selma recounts the true story of Martin Luther King Jr. and his involvement in the Civil Rights march from Selma to Montgomery, which captured the attention of the nation and the world, and led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965. The impressive ensemble cast features David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Andre Holland, Omar J. I'll just embed a bigger one. I couldn't see the trailer at work. But I saw it first yesterday before Intersellar.

I'm very iffy on films like this about black historical moments but this one... might just be a good one. I'm also usually weary of when Oprah is involved in a film today. She's playing Annie Lee Cooper, so that's cool. who cooper is: In 1962, Cooper returned to her hometown to participate in the civil rights movement. In January 1965, she stood in line for hours outside the Dallas County Courthouse to register to vote until Sheriff Jim Clark ordered her to vacate the premises. Clark prodded Cooper in the neck with a billy club until Cooper turned around and knocked the sheriff in the jaw. Deputies then wrestled Cooper down as Clark continued to beat her repeatedly with his club. Cooper was charged with "criminal provocation" and was escorted to the county jail, and then held for 11 hours before being allowed to leave. Some in the sheriff's department wanted to charge her with attempted murder. Following this incident, Cooper became a registered voter in her home state |

I've been following David Oyelowo ever since he was on Spooks (MI-5). I'm glad he's still getting some quality roles, and this looks like his best yet.

That's what I was thinking. That trailer has a very good energy and thrust to it. It just hits hard. I hope the film can do that. This is MLK. So... it would suck to have a mediocre film about him.
Talking about MLK. How is public school talking about the civil rights movement now? Seems like the further we get from certain important moments in our history the more it gets shoved to the side and gets a footnote. |

The buzz im getting from some Black circles is this -may be- one of the better films about King in terms of events and history.

Saw the trailer and think it looks good. I know it likely isn't in the film but the hip hop song in the trailer felt out of place in the trailer though.

Would have loved to see an Oliver Stone take though the estate didn't approve of him as his script delt with other aspects of Kings life

I remember a few MLK made for tv films back in the 70s. But I think what they mean is often these "Black Struggle" films have issues, and this one may have less of those issues.
Of course, that pretty much means the movie will flop because white people don't like to see movies that make them feel bad about being white. |

This trailer looks pretty good, didn't realize Oyelowo was the same guy who played the principal in Interstellar.

Calling it now: based on current events (Ferguson), this is as strong a lock for Best Picture as there ever has been. I'd bet the house on it.
I'm sure it is a good movie though. |

I dunno. Ferguson seems like a very bad kind of light from multiple communities or individuals to compare to the Selma events.

Really Snake? The events in Ferguson (regardless of your thoughts about it) have brought racism back to the forefront of public debate. This movie is about civil rights and race relations=Oscar gold. |

This movie is about civil rights and race relations=Oscar gold. He makes a decent point though. I wouldn't be surprised if Ferguson actually works against this movie, because while Racism is back in the forefront, there isn't a "we feel bad for you guys, here's an oscar!" vibe coming from the events, it's actually quite the opposite if my reading comprehension hasn't failed me. (Less "We're with you!" and more "What the fuck are you guys doing?"). Now if this were a movie about local business owners being looted, or say Koreatown during the LA Riots, that'd be a lock. |
