Amazing visuals, some very good acting and a great storyline. The only downside I felt was the excess of scientific jargon used in the second half of the movie..some things I pretty much failed to understand, perhaps since I am not from a scientific background. But overall, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar is a must-watch.

Finally watched this; been a busy month so with work and holidays so I finally got a chance to devote the 3 hours for it. I'm a big fan of Nolan, but my favorite movies of his are still probably Memento and Prestige before the Batman movies. I need to go through this thread and read everyone else's comments still, but leaving the theater I give it 3 1/2 stars.

I absolutely loved the first half or even 2/3rds of the movie. I loved the set up, loved the relationships established and the emotional moments between Cooper and Murph (despite all the arguments about Nolan sucking at emotion, I thought it was fantastic here). More then a few of those brought my fiancee to tears and choked me up a bit too, especially the video transmissions after the 23 years pass. Loved that the science was talked about but quickly got out of the way of the rest of the movie as well; as much as there was a bunch of sci fi babble, I really felt the movie concentrated on the human race and very human reactions and motivations for doing what they were doing. The visuals were absolutely fantastic, a different kind of wild breathtaking space view from Gravity.

And then Matt Damon showed up and almost ruined it for me. As soon as they hit the ice planet and wake him up, I thought it was ridiculously obvious and transparent what was going to happen and I kept hoping that there would be something to mix up. Instead it was incredibly predictable for the entire sequence; lying to them, the robot he broke himself, attacking Cooper, trying to leave himself... all of it was just so plain right through him not listening to the calls to not open the door not fully docked. All of this probably knocked a full star off my final rating.

From there, the rest of the movie and ending got a little bit hokey for me but still worked. It didn't fully make sense, and felt like all of that 5th dimension stuff took a bit of a stretch to take in and understand, but it was enough for me to buy it and at least enjoy the ending and i'm glad it ended "happy."

What a disappointment. Yes, the film has ambitious visuals, and an ambitious theme...but it relies on cheap sentiment to bear them out. I think this was Nolan's attempt to prove that he doesn't make cold, emotionally distant films. How he thought he'd achieve that by having scientists discuss love while physically removed from the entire rest of the human race is beyond me, but I think it proves that this stuff is his achilles heel.

The plot is needlessly complicated to the point where I was constantly asking "Wait, why are they doing this instead of this far simpler thing that would work way better?" Damon's character going nuts was such a silly thing to add in, completely derailed the momentum of the film.

Cooper saves the human race by using technology created by humans who survived the blight because Cooper saved them? Massive paradox much?

Meh. Nolan hasn't made a movie I've liked since TDK. I keep hoping he'll break out of his slump, but this wasn't it.

I still think the future people caused the blight and needed to repair it to prevent their non-existence.

All I remember about this movie months later is how much I liked the visiting of the planets and the adventure of it. Hated Damon, Affleck and could have done with less plot. Still really like the movie despite those issues.

E Unit

Pretty much my sentiments in a nutshell. The Damon part was completely unnessary, but as many small plot holes as there were (how could there not be?) I still sat back and took in the story in for what it was. With a story like this, there's no way you can enjoy it if you intend on picking apart it's pieces. But the visuals were astounding, I enjoyed the cast, and the plot - for the most part, was okay.

I also don't see what was so awesome about the planets. One had water, the other had ice. Nothing really that amazing.

Nope they weren't, but it was enough to get the imagination rolling for me. Frozen clouds, tidal waves and barren terrain was all it needed, happily devoid of giant monsters and goofy aliens. Had a nice little sense of discovery to it.

E Unit

I don't think we needed mind blowing environments to get the point across what they were encountering. I think that's the main difference he was showing us here, those defining moments between reality and sci-fi. I'm fairly certain the new Star Wars movies may provide amazing on that level.

I felt the exact same way. It was originally written by Jonathan Nolan for Steven Spielberg and even with the changes Nolan made to the script, it still feels like a Spielberg film.
I'm surprised Spielberg wasn't a producer.

Also I felt this film was nothing like 2001. In Kubrick's film, humanity is a tiny part of a much larger universe that we're only beginning to comprehend. In Nolan's universe, humanity is so all powerful that we can save ourselves from ourselves and apparently resolve time paradoxes without any problem because love.
