they're so far removed from Coop and Murph that it would not have mattered. It's inconsequential. It's about Murph and Coop and not about a full blown family reunion.

No, the fact they acted like zombies who couldn't even see Coop kinda threw me out of the story.
Spoiler:
And Coop was 124, not 1000 years old, so they're not that far removed.

At that moment in time it was about Murph and Coop. That's it. It's easy to convey but focusing on the rest of the people? Ok, I'm not that OCD, so I didn't mind or care. We were at journey's end, so it worked well for me.

I thought the end was fine. They knew that Coop never left them. They were old and wise about it. I thought it all made sense.

I agree, but at the same time, it shows that Nolan really has no idea how to handle extras on set. This, and the football stadium scene in TDKR just solidify that.

Hey, I was an extra in the football stadium! :(

A science writer in The New York Times scrutinizes INTERSTELLAR in "Interstellar," The Cinema of Physicists:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/18/sc...ef=todayspaper

He has mixed feelings about it and some of his criticisms echo some of those already made in this thread.

Here's a quote:

“Some might say, ‘Why quibble; it’s just a movie?’ ” said David Grinspoon of the Planetary Science Institute in Boulder, Colo., and a participant in the 2006 workshop, who complained of sloppy planetary science in the movie. Even with a voracious blight, he said, it would take millions of years to draw down Earth’s oxygen.

“So why did they take care with relativity but not even bother with planetary science?” he went on. “Arthur C. Clarke is spinning in his stargate!”

As a moviegoer, I have a high tolerance for artistic license and wild ideas. As long as it was in space in this universe, the movie worked for me. It was on either end, on Earth and in the fifth dimension, that “Interstellar” goes off the rails.

It is hard for me to imagine, for example, a discredited and underground NASA able to launch rockets to another galaxy, scouting expeditions through the wormhole, spending trillions of dollars without anyone knowing. This crew should give secret-keeping lessons to the N.S.A.

You should have posted the whole thing.

By posting only your bit here you give the illusion that he very negative feelings about it. He doesn't at least not as harshly as you seem to promote it via the bit you posted.. Ash, I like you, but you've been doing that a lot over the past what? year? 2 years? maybe always? I dunno. But I'm never really sure what you're trying to push forward in terms of your want. Seems like you've got some dog to put into your fight w/ some films.

In the case of the Nolan films it seems like you want to down it, which is fine, but what bothers me is that it feels like you don't want to fully explore much of both sides of the critical divide. Within yourself and outwardly. neil degrasse tyson, who has pretty much become the new millennium's science guy, had very little criticism to say about the science. Narratively it may be another thing but it seems to be a divide where some people follow w/ the science of the film and some don't. Each person's reasons w/ their own background.

It almost seems childish the way you've been. So why have you been like that?

Ash likes posting extreme views, both very positive and very negative, as it stirs conversation that "it was alright" doesn't.

I don't think he actually sides one way or another with most movies until he actually watches them, and I'm not sure he's seen Interstellar yet.

Early on in the thread, he posted the 4/4 New York Post review.

Maybe. It just seems he skews a lot more to one side based on what I remember.

For a movie that took advantage of sentimental moments I was surprised that the whole family didn't bust out in tears.

For what? Somebody they didn't have any actual social relation to? Murph was on her way out. They brought her out to see Coop. She wasn't going to be there long. I'd understand if the focus for them is on her and not Coop.

Ultimately that detail didn't bother me much though it crossed my mind while it was happening. Them having a moment or not doesn't change the fact that
Spoiler:
Murph was going to die and Coop was going to chase Brand down

Kind of like how I didn't care how NASA, an organization that was apparently underground, had so much money and was obviously launching stuff into space largely undetected. Largely trivial details for both cases.

When everybody likes something I skew negative. When everybody hates something, I skew positive. When reaction is mixed, I post both sides.

Something like that. -ptth-

But the whole article I posted the link to is well worth reading. I chose that quote to highlight because of the Arthur C Clarke line that I found hilarious.

It might fit with the theme of the story, but I know if I was there to visit my dying grandma, and my great-granddad shows up after disappearing for 90 years, not looking a day older, I'd have some questions. "Hey, aren't you the guy that went into the center of a black hole and survived to tell about it? I guess grandma wasn't crazy when she told us stories about her dad visiting her from beyond when she was a kid and giving her a coded message in an old watch that led to her solving an equation, leading to the survival of the entire human race!"

Regarding the sound, I only had an issue with about 3 words in the entire movie

I really liked that character. The desperation, his struggle, his passion overridden by human function etc. Really fucked up when you think about it.

Then it would be a six hour movie and you guys would still be complaining. Same shit. different drink.

Regarding the reunification scene at the end. There was a jump cut after Murph tells Cooper to go find Brand. The continuing voiceover implies that their conversation went on for some time. She did not just immediately "kick him out". They may have spent hours together, and with the other family.
