I know all of you Marvel fans are super excited about this. But I think there can be too much of a good thing, and it may lead to general audiences losing interest entirely and the comic book trend may dwindle.

I'm not a Marvel fan, I'm actually pretty critical of them in general, I just don't think 9 movies over 5 years is a lot - and I agree fatigue is inevitable.

I revised my last post though, I forgot about X-men and Spider-man 2 releasing this summer as well. Of course, they're also Marvel, just not from Disney. We had 4 Marvel movies this year alone.

Yeah, I don't think Marvel itself is producing too much, but when you add in the franchises from Sony(Spider-Man) and Fox(X-Men, Fantastic Four) and DC, it's just getting to be too much. All of these studios are really ramping it up around the same time. Sony wants to make more Spider-Man movies even featuring the Sinister Six, DC and Marvel are putting out a dozen movies over the next couple of years. They're all trying to squeeze as much money out of this trend as possible. It's like they know that in Hollywood these trends only last for a certain amount of time and they're trying to make as much as possible while they still can.

I'd argue that WB is trying to hit something that gets them bank more than Marvel. They're actually taking risks. WB not so much.

Again you have to think Is it because the genre is so centralized now? That it's pretty much just a Marvel vs. WB. With some out of studio Marvel there to sprinkle "variety" there?

I'd rather this now much more genre move forward than say... Horror.

Thanks I guess. I don't actually keep an Excel spreadsheet of every movie released, so I was just making a wild guess. I knew it was a metric shit ton of movies in a year. The point still remains that >90% of them are pure shit, and that is what is oversaturating the market, not the MCU movies which had been decent to excellent so far.

But it's like with any other genre. The bad gets ignored and forgotten and the good gets praised. For comic movies the bad would be Fantastic Four and Spider-Man and the good is the MCU and X-Men.

Well maybe not but most likely something like that. There has been over saturation since long before all of us. This isn't new. What is new is that a smaller genre getting so much exposure in so little time. It can seem like over saturation but the numbers don't add up to it.

I think it depends on what Spider-man, Spider-man 2 is still one of my favorite super hero flicks. The rest are more or less turd buckets taking shits.

90% is a bit high, I'd say about 20% of the movies released each year are at least worth a watch, it's just unrealistic to think anybody would sit down and watch 130 movies a year.

More than that actually. If the other poster is correct that 578 movies have been released so far this year, then 10% of that is 57.8 (round up to 58) movies. I would definitely say that there haven't been 58 good movies this year. I would be hard pressed to even list 20 movies this year that were worth the money.

20 is easy for this year, it actually has been a pretty enjoyable year, but everybody does have different taste -- ie: A Most Wanted Man. Well made. Fantastic acting. Well reviewed. Bored the shit out of me.

I am really picky when it comes to movies worth buying. I don't have thousands of DVDs/Blus like many posters here. My collection is in the 200-250 range. I typically only find 3-5 movies a year that are actually worth buying. I rent maybe 10-15 new movies a year, but only end up buying 3-5 of them.

Buying is totally different. I don't buy much at all unless I absolutely love a movie. I rent a ton of movies though, and a large chunk have been quite good.

Yes, there are hundreds of movies released every year in the U.S., but that's not really what we're talking about here. These Marvel movies are a handful of the the what, 15 to 20 large scale "tentpole" type releases each year? There's endless numbers of wonderful smaller budget, independent, and foreign releases each year, but those don't really scratch the same itch. Sometimes I'm in the mood for some good ole' blockbuster entertainment, but at this point there are few choices beyond these big comic book franchises. Sure they've all been at least pretty good (the MCU films anyway), but at a certain point it becomes less about what we're getting, and more about what we're not getting. It's almost like blockbuster opportunity cost. Where's the next Back to the Future? Or the next Ghostbusters? Or the next Raiders of the Lost Ark? You know, fun, original blockbusters that don't have have the weight of a giant franchise behind them. Instead we have Fox, WB, Sony and whoever else all doing their best to copy Marvel's success. Of course Marvel can't be held responsible for what these other studios are putting out, but eventually it's all going to reach a critical mass. Obviously the tipping point will be different for everyone. For me, I think I'm just about there and that makes me kind of sad.

In the US? I'd argue there is at least 20 so far. I would never just stay within the border of american cinema. Fuck that. I want the whole goddamn world if I can have it.

People can barely wait a week for the next hour of The Walking Dead, but we're going to be over-saturated with Marvel movies with another 10hrs or so over the next couple years?

As long as the movies are entertaining and drive the story forward, the movies will do fine. Heck, as has been noted, Bond has been around for decades, and those movies (when they're well made), do very well.

I don't think there's oversaturation either; people thought that back in the 2000's when there were more shitty movies coming out, but comic book movies stayed around and came back even stronger. If there was one every month, then maybe - but 2-3 a year isn't that bad to me at all, and given the overall story arcs I actually thinks it helps keep the universe moving along rather then people forgetting what happened a year or two ago.
