If that's the case then I would assume it's the long rumored Katie Sackoff in the role or Emily Blunt. Or they went with a complete unknown. Maybe Whedon got Sarah Michelle Gellar or Eliza Dushku to come partake in all the fun.

Well Whedon recently hinted that not all the heroes that will show up in Ultron have been revealed, so this might make sense.

'Captain Marvel' Movie Targets 'Inside Out' and 'Guardians' Writers
Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy, and Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote Pixar's upcoming Inside Out, are in negotiations write Captain Marvel, one of Marvel’s key projects as it is serving as the company’s first female-driven movie.
The project was revealed during the studio’s frothy late October announcement and has a release date of July 6, 2018.
No director is involved at this stage.
Interestingly, Perlman and LeFauve are not a writing team but are being turned into one for this project. Both impressed Marvel’s Mr. Fantastic, Kevin Feige, with their separate takes; Feige and his team thought it best to combine the two for sensational results results.
(This is opposite of double development, a practice used by Warners for their DC projects in which writers are hired to work on two separate scripts with the goal of meshing them down the line.)
Marvel also made an effort to find female screenwriters to tackle the heroine. (Fun fact: When Marvel first had her own book in the 1970s, titled Ms. Marvel, the comic's tagline was "This female fights back!")
Dealmaking has not exactly been on going at the speed of Quicksilver with talks having begun in December.
Marvel is hero name of Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy project, and flight (even into space!).
Perlman (CAA and Management 360) was part of Marvel’s early screenwriting program and worked on the initial draft of Galaxy. She is now also writing a comic for Marvel, Gamora, based on the Guardians character.
LeFauve (Verve) is a producer with credits such as the very un-comic book movie indie The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys on her curriculum vitae and has a past that involves running Egg Pictures, the former production banner of Jodie Foster.
Marvel had no comment.

From what Perlman said, GotG's script was pretty much all Gunn. The treatment got it moving but then Gunn came on and did his thing.

There's a rumor that Michelle MacLaren, who just left Wonder Woman, might be considered for this. That would be kind of funny.

Re: Captain Marvel (11/2/2018) - News, rumors, etc.
via Collider:
I've yet to see any film she's directed but... is she any good? From the trailers I've seen of her feature films, it just seems like general visuals and direction.
[Update: Shortly after posting, it was reported that Patty Jenkins has now been set to direct Wonder Woman. We still stand by our Marvel sources, however, that Jolie is in contention to take the helm of Captain Marvei. Our original story follows below.]
Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman just lost director Michelle MacLaren, and Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel hasn’t named a director yet. A couple months ago, it was reported that Angelina Jolie was circling Captain Marvel, and we now have confirmation that she’s definitely under consideration for the job. We’re also hearing that there’s the possibility she could direct Wonder Woman now that MacLaren has left the project. Only one studio can get Jolie since Wonder Woman is due in 2017 and Captain Marvel is coming in 2018.
There are also the obvious questions of whether she wants to do either movie. She’s currently attached to direct Africa starring Brad Pitt, but while production was poised to get underway this summer, that project may be falling apart over financing issues. If it does, her schedule is wide open to direct Captain Marvel or Wonder Woman.
Jolie is a terrific choice from an optics standpoint. In addition to a strong female director telling the story of a strong female superhero, she has the profile to attract non-comic book fans. The press loves her, she has no problem doing interviews, she’s personable, and that’s all essential to bringing the property to a larger audience. She may be a bigger star than Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot and will probably be bigger than whoever’s cast as Captain Marvel, and that’s a big asset to both studios. Jolie also gained a little experience crafting action set pieces and using extensive visual effects on Unbroken, so it’s not like she’s going from a minor indie to a tent-pole picture.
However, there are also some obstacles. Warner Bros. already parted ways with MacLaren over creative differences, so will they have the same problem with Jolie? Furthermore, do they want to be seen as smothering the vision of one of the biggest movie stars in the world? The issue with Marvel Studios comes from their creative restraints where they allow for some personality to come into their pictures, but the filmmaker still has to work inside the studio’s mold so that there’s a visual and tonal consistency between inter-connected pictures.
Nevertheless, getting Jolie is mutually beneficial for either studio, and while I think a more seasoned director could be a better choice—especially since Unbroken is underwhelming—I would still be interested to see what she would do with either property.

Re: Captain Marvel (11/2/2018) - News, rumors, etc.
Writers are official now -
http://deadline.com/2015/04/marvel-c...ve-1201413032/
Rumors have been circulating about who would pen Captain Marvel and now Marvel themselves have made it official. Guardians Of The Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve will write the screenplay for the superhero pic slated to hit theaters on November 2, 2018, the Disney-owned superhero giant announced online today. LeFauve most recently co-wrote Disney-Pixar’s upcoming film Inside Out. The animated film set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month before hitting theaters on June 19.
With no director and no cast set yet, little is known yet about Marvel’s specific plans for the pic. We do know focuses on the Carol Danvers character, who first appeared in the Marvel Comics in 1968. Major Carol Danvers was introduced as a member of the U.S. Air Force in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (1968). She debuted as the first incarnation of Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1 (January 1977) after a fusion of alien Kree and human genes gives her superhuman powers.
Perlman is repped by CAA and Management 360 and LeFauve is repped by Verve and Zaftig Films.

Re: Captain Marvel (11/2/2018) - News, rumors, etc.
Marvel’s very first female-led superhero movie, “Captain Marvel,” is still another three years off from becoming reality. And yet, comic book fans everywhere are clamoring to find out who will eventually take on the role of Air Force Colonel Carol Danvers, to the point where they’ll get hyped about literally any rumor.
But last night (September 29) at an LA event celebrating the home release of “Avengers: Age Of Ultron,” Marvel producers Kevin Feige and Jeremy Latcham said all those casting rumors you’ve heard so far have been greatly exaggerated. Turns out, they’re “not that close” to casting a Carol yet — at all.
“There won’t be any announcements about that this year,” Feige said. “I think right now we’re scripting the film, figuring out who we want Carol Danvers to be, and really what the structure of the movie will be and what her part will be in some of our other Phase 3 films. And it would be next year that we start to really think about casting.”
“We have really amazing writers on the movie,” Latcham added. “Meg [LeFauve] and Nicole [Perlman] are great, and I think getting the character right first is going to lead the charge. We want to make sure we know who it is before we can start figuring out who should play it.”
Which begs the question: does the team at Marvel Studios know about all the women we’ve already decided would be ideal for the part? Yes, yes they do.
“For me, we always have a clear sense of who we want to cast and who we’re interested in,” Latcham said. “We have amazing casting directors — Sarah Finn, who’s been with us since ’Iron Man’ — but at the same time, when a fan list comes out…”
“We look at it!” Feige admitted.
“We read it, we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like,” Latcham added. “Sometimes it’s really enlightening. Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right. It’s always fun to kinda go through it and see what people are up to.”

I found it interesting that they admit to reading and considering fan suggestions.

Noooooooooo. So I guess Captain Marvel won't be in Infinity War 1 or she'll be introduced in/before it? Hrmmmm.
Black Panther and Captain Marvel were the ones I'm most interested in.

While Marvel Studios continues to add more badass women to their big-screen superhero roster, we still haven't seen them produce a completely female-driven movie. On the small screen, Netflix recently debuted Jessica Jones, but on the big screen, Captain America: Civil War stars Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) have yet to see their own solo movies in the works.
That'll change in March of 2019 when the female-led Captain Marvel is slated to hit theaters, though something tells us we'll meet the woman who will play Carol Danvers -- who gains superhero powers through an encounter with an alien, transforming her into a character called Captain Marvel -- sooner rather than later. During a recent chat at the Captain America: Civil War press day, Marvel chief Kevin Feige told Fandango that we're only days away from finding out a lot more about the film that's slated to arrive between the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.
"I think we’ll be announcing a filmmaker in the next month or two, and probably some cast members later in the summer, at the end of the summer," Feige told us, alluding to the possibility that Marvel will make a big Captain Marvel announcement at this year's San Diego Comic-Con in July.
When we tried to poke around for plot details, Feige was naturally vague, saying the film's main focus will be "about Carol Danvers and that journey to being Captain Marvel."

I'm guessing it'll be a woman cuz that's the thing to do w/ minority related stuff.
Marvel needs to get Lexi Alexander for the Punisher show that they'll eventually do, one would think. She understood that character very well. Crap choices put on her or not.
