Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” is outpacing all superhero movies in advance ticket sales for Fandango’s online tickets service, eclipsing 2016’s “Batman v Superman.”
Fandango reported Wednesday that “Black Panther” had topped daily ticket sales in the wake of its world premiere and first screenings on Monday night — even though it doesn’t open in theaters until Feb. 16.
According to a Fandango survey of more than 1,000 “Black Panther” moviegoers: 97% are looking forward to a different kind of superhero movie; 95% look forward to the film’s positive messages; 93% said they couldn’t wait to see Chadwick Boseman in his own “Black Panther” movie after seeing him in “Captain America: Civil War;” 86% are excited to see the film’s all-female guards/warriors, the Dora Milaje; and 85% are intrigued by the film’s exotic setting in the mythical African kingdom of Wakanda.

I'm sure this will do well, and will be there opening weekend, but I'm having a hard time believing that advance sales are outpacing all other superhero films. My theater of choice currently has two showings scheduled for Thursday night, the same two showings that they put up the first day tickets went on sale. The first showing is 3/4 full, and not a single seat is sold as of yet for the second showing.

Our local theaters have it showing on between 3 and 6 screens at the same time on Thursday in various formats (RPX/XD/IMAX, Real 3D, Standard).

Yup. Fandango is lying.

I'm not calling them liars, maybe I worded it badly. I'm sure that their numbers say what they're releasing. I just saying that I don't see a demand at my theaters at this point greater than other recent superhero films. To take BvS for instance, since that is cited specifically in the article, there were several more showings listed at 2 weeks out and many of them were nearly sold out. I'm aware that my theaters aren't representative of the country as a whole.

Is $130m now some sort of high water mark?

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised. You know how there's always a predominantly black movie that arrives with little fanfare to a huge opening weekend, followed by articles on Monday wondering how that happened? There's this huge audience out there that is under served by most of the movies coming out of Hollywood, so when some Tyler Perry movie comes out, the deprived audience comes out in droves.
Now we have the situation where there is a blockbuster big budget movie that has a strong pedigree in front of and behind the camera that is also very proud of its blackness. Basically this is the first time this has ever happened. I can see a huge audience turning out and lots of $$$. And I hope it does. It would be a win-win for everyone.

Random stats, Of the roughly 40 movies that opened above $110m, only 5 have not cracked $300m:
Man of Steel ($116.7m opening, $291m cume -- 64.6% second weekend drop)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 ($125m opening, $296m cume -- 60.7% 2w drop)
Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1 ($138m -> $281m, 69.8% 2w drop)
Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 ($141m -> $292m, 69.1% 2w drop)
Twilight New Moon ($142.8m -> $296m, 70% 2w drop)
It's worth noting though, that 4 of those had 2nd weekend boosts from Thanksgiving.
So it'll be interesting to see.

From the people that brought you "I can't handle when people like things I don't like before I've even seen it to decide for myself: The Movie"
This is a real thing.
That's about 5500 people who are in support of this. If each one creates only 10 dummy accounts, that's 55,000 "rotten" scores. If they each do that for the 10 days listed, that's 550,000 "rotten" reviews. Fucking nerds.
Oh, and... look at the description:

It also sets BP up for a rather unfair shellacking on the web if it does not get anywhere near 150m but hopefully the fever that has people predicting such a gargantuan opening will break in a day two.

The unicorns have shifted up to $200m+ (4 exist: Force Awakens, Last Jedi, Jurassic World, The Avengers), it hasn't been $150m in some time (16 in the past 10-ish years... since Spider-man 3 threw down the gauntlet).
Right now people are thinking it'll perform like Deadpool, which is an odd comparison, but it opened during the same general period of time (Feb 12th) to $132m and grossed $363m.
