Did you just go out of your way to say "I don't see color..."?

The ethnic make-up of the cast and characters is irrelevant - it just looks like a really good movie.
Yep...it sure sounds like "I don't see color..."

Look..It's relevant to Black Comic Book fans. VERY RELEVANT. When I read comments from Black folks who've been fans of Black Panther since the 60's and 70's and can see the utter shock that 1. this film was even made... and 2. the excitement to see a film that seems to at least try to show some respect to African culture...showing strong Black Women..seeing a Black Man/Character in a Major Comic Book Film..I REALIZE IT'S A BIG FUCKIN' DEAL. . I'm not a even a Marvel fan, but trust me...THIS MCU film will get "extra" support from Me, my wife, and many others.

And that fact that it seems non-Blacks want to see this film, albeit for different reasons, it's still a big deal.

Why 'Black Panther' really is such a big deal

I'm glad to see that some people are getting more out of it than that, but the movie looks like a big time winner on it's own merits.
Thanks?

.. but the movie looks like a big time winner on it's own merits.
I never see you downplaying things when people here want to see a film just because there's hot woman in the lead role. So why take the time to downplay the cultural reasons someone wants to see this? Can't we just have this one?

That's kind of a weird hand placement on Serkis. Unless someone is trying to choke him.

In total agreement here. We can't talk about how much a film like Wonder Woman did to empower women without saying the same thing about this film for black people. It's a big deal when you see a "black movie" sold as just standard superhero fare.

Reminds me of bad Rob Liefeld artwork. You can totally tell the original image did not have a hand there, but the geniuses at wherever, decided to stick one on. Movie posters are definitely a lost art nowadays.

I don't think it's irrelevant. I remember when the Spawn movie came out, McFarlane supposedly insisted that they not change the race of Al Simmons, but the compromise was that they make his former best friend, Terry, a white guy, so that the film wasn't perceived as a "black movie."

However many years later, we have a big budget Marvel movie, that's highly anticipated, and the majority of the cast are black, and it's not a film that perpetuates stereotypes, but instead promotes a positive portrayal.

Looks like he's showing off a robotic arm or some kind of weapon. Note the lines on his forearm.

Not sure why they don't just show his Klaw instead of that fake looking hand?

Maybe that's the way they designed it for the movie?

Wow, surprising there are no Thursday night showings, at least not at my ArcLights. Showtimes start on Friday at 10 am.

Re: Black Panther (D: Coogler, 2/16/18) S: Chadwick Boseman

He hasn’t even hit tracking yet, but Black Panther from Disney/Marvel is already a hot ticket out of the gate. After tickets went on sale Monday night, Black Panther is already outstripping Captain America: Civil War as Fandango’s best-selling MCU title in the first 24 hours of presales. Captain America: Civil War kicked off the opening of summer 2016 during the first weekend of May with $179M.

Now there’s never a direct correlation between great advance ticket sales and anticipated weekend box office, however, we’re talking about a Marvel release here and presales are part of the barometer for determining opening weekends. Black Panther opens on Feb. 16, which is part of the four-day President’s Day holiday weekend and adjacent to Valentine’s Day which falls on a Wednesday this year.

Industry estimates do not believe at this point in time that Black Panther will emulate Civil War‘s opening despite the strong. If that’s the case, Black Panther would not only become the highest opening of all-time for a February release, besting Fox/Marvel’s R-rated Deadpool ($132.4M), but the best opening before summer. Currently, non-Disney estimates before tracking believe Black Panther will post a $80M-$85M start with a possible shot at $100M-plus.

In a recent Fandango survey of more than 8K moviegoers, Black Panther was voted as one of the year’s top two most anticipated movies, ranking second only to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War which opens on May 4. Panther star Chadwick Boseman was also voted by the fans as the most anticipated comic book hero in a standalone movie, while co-stars Danai Gurira & Winston Duke were picked among the rising stars of 2018, and Michael B. Jordan as one of 2018’s most anticipated screen villains. Creed director Ryan Coogler directed and co-wrote Black Panther.

Nice! I was wondering if this would track similarly to Doctor Strange.

Re: Black Panther (D: Coogler, 2/16/18) S: Chadwick Boseman

Yup. It's going to be really interesting to see how this does. I think it will most definitely go above estimates. The combination of

1. Being a Marvel movie
2. Being the Marvel movie leading up to Infinity War
2. Being a movie that will appeal to a larger demographic

could be a perfect storm.

I think black audiences who don't even follow Marvel films will check this out solely for the fact that it is a black superhero.

Lupita Nyongo put out a twitter video for her fans that notes the servers were being slammed 15 minutes into the tickets going on sale on-line, so this bodes well for the films box office spoils. If Dr. Strange pulled in 85 million (which I thought was damn impressive for a Doctor Strange film) then I suspect Black Panther will pull a Thor Ragnarok and do better than forecast on its opening weekend, perhaps literally getting close to or nearly matching the $122 million of Thor Ragnarok. I do not think it is impossible that it could happen, but it could also still hit the projected 85 million - 90 million opening weekend and still be a nice hit for Marvel.

That new trailer looked fantastic. This sucker gonna be dark but colorful. And Andy Serkis getting actual screen time is great.
