The character had slipped in status through the 80's and 90's, but in the late 60's and through much of the 70's he was a pretty big deal in the Avengers comic and occasionally in his own titles.

Given the era you're citing for the character's popularity (and subsequent decline), not exactly surprising. Maybe you feel he was a bigger deal anecdotally (Wikipedia cites low sales of those series despite popularity from college students), but from the perspective of general public awareness and popularity today prior to the announcement of his own movie and on screen appearance in Civil War, he's pretty far down the list.

Id say he was certainly higher on the list than Dr. Strange. Probably on par with Ant Man. Before the Guardians movie came out, very few people had even heard of them. People have heard of BP at least.

Certainly after Civil War they have. Before, not so much.

Looks good aside from Michael B Jordan's goofy ass hairstyle

As a black man I have to surprisingly say it feels good seeing that much black on that poster. They will get my money opening weekend even though I'm not a huge fan of Black Panther.

Looks awesome - neat to see a completely different world right here on our planet.

I love the environments, and no pun intended but the use of color in the world.

I'm really interested in seeing how this movie will perform. The only other big budget action movie with a primarily black cast were the Bad Boys movies, and there's never been a comic book movie with an almost all-black cast (no, the Blade movies don't count).

Fun facts: Eddie Murphy is in 6 of the top 12 grossing black movies of all time. The #1 grossing black movie of all time is Coming to America with $281M, in 1988 dollars.

I really don't think race has anything to do with it when Marvel Studios is involved.

There is no reason for this not to open at $70mil +.

I grew up reading tons of Marvel comics during the 70's, Black Panther was decently popular back then, I always thought he was a cool character so I'm looking forward to the film.

I think it'll get the same kind of bump Wonder Woman did.

Damn that looks like a blast. I think it's safe to say this movie is going to do spectacularly well because that action looks pretty intense.
