Need help with a movie
 

I first saw this movie back in the 70's/80's. It's a horror movie set somewhere isolated. A family lives in a country home, living off the land, when some tragedy strikes, I seem to think it was some kind of meteorite or something like that. Whatever it was, it fouls the earth, and the family, they start getting sickly, their land starts getting sickly. I distinctly remember them bringing in a head of lettuce from their garden to eat for dinner, cutting it open, and this ugly yellow-green slop/ooze pours out of it. I could've sworn Rod Steiger was in it, but I just looked through hs entire movie credit listing and could find nothing that sounded like this movie. I wish I could remember more about the movie but that's all that comes to mind. Does anyone have any ideas?

Looks like Claude Akins and Wil Wheaton was in it.

Sounds like a version of the Lovecraft story The Colour Out of Space.

The Curse (also known as The Farm or The Curse 1) is a 1987 horror film adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's The Colour Out of Space directed by David Keith.

The entire movie is available on YouTube. The lettuce scene is around 31 minutes in.
