The Adam Sandler / Happy Madison / Netflix Thread

re: The Adam Sandler / Happy Madison / Netflix Thread
EXCLUSIVE: Adam Sandler has set up his next Netflix comedy, and Chris Rock is joining him. They’ll star in The Week Of, a comedy that will be directed by frequent Happy Madison collaborator Robert Smigel.
The picture will shoot on Long Island this summer and will cover the week of preparation for a wedding in which Sandler’s character’s daughter marries Rock’s character’s son. Sandler and Allen Covert will produce for Happy Madison, and Barry Bernardi and Tim Herlihy will be exec producers. Sandler co-wrote the comedy with Smigel, who is best known for playing Triumph the Insult Comic Dog but also has been collaborating with Sandler since Saturday Night Live. Smigel has played characters in most of his early films and was a writer on such Sandler vehicles as Grown Ups, which also starred Rock.
This is the fourth and final film in the first deal Sandler made to generate comedy vehicles exclusive to Netflix, a pact that was renewed last month. The latest of those films, Sandy Wexler, launched last week, with Netflix saying all three have been among its biggest releases, though the service doesn’t provide specific viewership breakdowns. Netflix is staked not only in Sandler (Netflix acquired the Cannes-bound Noah Baumbach-directed The Meyerowitz Stories, starring Sandler, Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller and Emma Thompson — but also in Rock. Netflix paid around $40 million for Rock to return to the stand up stage for the first time in eight years for two comedy specials that will air exclusively on the streaming service. That amount is the high water mark for comedy specials. Now, Netflix has a Rock narrative comedy vehicle as well. The Week Of will premiere on Netflix globally in 2018.
“Adam Sandler and Chris Rock are cornerstones of the Netflix comedy family and we are over the moon about these two legends reuniting to give our members worldwide a healthy dose of the hilarity that they have been creating together for years,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos in confirming the deal for Deadline. “Similar in the romantic comedy tone of Sandler’s most recent film Sandy Wexler, this film will be the perfect vehicle for Sandler and Rock and their millions of fans around the world.”
Sandler is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Rock by ICM Partners and Smigel by CAA.

I would describe Sandy Wexler as a character drama with Happy Madison undertones.
I think it's was pretty solid. Light and breezy. Funny. I'm pretty sure most of that happened in real life.
Shame nobody here watched it so I'll never know what you guys think of it.

That was awful, even by Sandler standards.
I know he's terrible but Chris Rock is really funny and brilliant. Why can't he get any work in good comedies? He should have had the career that Kevin Hart has. I thought Top 5 was fantastic but besides that, his filmography is really lacking.

Chris Rock tried and tried but he never made a movie that connected at the box office. He tried action comedy, romantic comedy, indie comedy, nothing worked.

He doesn't seem like the type who put in the hard work that Hart has. That dude never stops and his success is a textbook definition of hard work + dedication = your goals.
Also, Rock never had the charisma. Great comedian but his personality wasn't as appealing as Hart.

Rock is hundreds of times better than Kevin Hart. He just couldn't connect in films for some reason.

Face it, if it weren't for Sandler, Rock might never have a job. (see Grown Ups, Grown Ups 2, Sandy Wexler, Don't Mess With the Zohan, The Longest Yard)

He doesn't have a likable personality. Hart comes off as someone you'd like to hang out with. Rock, not so much. And lets be honest, he's not very good looking. He's a pure stand-up comedian, not a very good actor.

I definitely will contribute and if circumstances are exactly as they are today - me with my current salary and her making the salary of a 3 year old I'll possibly be paying for it all but I definitely wont be turning down offers from the father of the groom/other bride and I'm not going to be lying and saying paying for anything is something I've always dreamed about.

My inlaws were not of substantial means. They could only contribute $5K and we covered the rest ($12K). I was grateful to get it. I cannot imagine paying $50K for a wedding.

Anyone who chooses a wedding over a down payment on a house is a moron. No offense to your friend...

Well completely OT, but I'm going to the wedding of a girl I've known since she was born in a few weeks. Old family friends. Anyway, her parents saved $50K for her and said she could have it for a down payment on a house or for the wedding. Girl chose the wedding.

If we couldn't afford a house, then we would've most certainly taken that option.

I wish Adam Sandler was in this so I could say, with 100% certainty, I would never, ever, ever watch it. I like Spade as a supporting character and I can't think of anything noteworthy he's in with out Chris Farley.
