^ So even after forking over millions of dollars to air the ad during the Super Bowl they still have to label it "Big Game" spot?

So this opens a week after POWER RANGERS. Two Hollywood blockbusters based on Japanese imports of the same vintage with roughly the same audiences and they have to open a week apart? What genius came up with that?!

I didn't love Lucy, but Johansson has become rather one note since the old days of Ghost World and Lost. But she is good in these roles and always looks good in the roles...

I have not seen the anime since it originally came out. I remember liking it, but still preferring a lot of others animes. This movie does look very nice though and I like the transition of the world from animation to live action. I would love for it to really start a move towards live action amines cafted with love for the source. Fist of the North Star, Golgo 13, Ninja Scrolll would all be amazing. Still not sure about that Akita remake they keep talking about. Sounds like the script is lacking.

I would think it would be two totally different audiences, Japanese import or no.

Also the sponsor thing is addressed:
Judging by this year’s Super Bowl sponsors, nominative use as it pertains to the Super Bowl is not as simple as buying airtime to get the right to use the phrase whenever you want. You have to have “official sponsor” status, such as Papa John’s.
The pizza chain has a social media tie-in that encourages users to predict the outcome of the Super Bowl coin toss to win free pizza. It is allowed to toss around the phrase Super Bowl quite liberally.
Pizza Hut, on the other hand, has purchased airtime for the Super Bowl, but does not hold “official sponsor” status, according to Forbes.

Doubtful. We can only hope for an unrated Blu-ray release. But I hope I'm wrong...

Roughly the same audiences? The like Japanese stuff type of audiences? I'm not sure how well either audience crosses over but I don't think it'd be enough to call them the "same" audience. Hated MMPR as a kid. Loved GiTS. Still hate MMPR now.

Yeah Power Rangers was a kid's show to me growing up. Ghost in the Shell was never a kid's cartoon.

I've looked into this recently (I write for a TV show and this comes up every year). It sounds like right now most people are "scared" to use the Super Bowl because they think the NFL will come after them. But the NFL might not actually be able to enforce their rule that no one can use the Super Bowl name but them. So we're in this weird limbo where no one wants to fight the NFL but if they did they might win. Some good info here from 2013.
Thanks for the info. I've always assumed it was a trademark/copyright type deal. It just seems to have gotten really out of hand the last 10 years or so regarding using "The Big Game" over "Super Bowl".
Maybe it's just a pet peeve of mine so I notice it a lot more than other things like "World Series" which I've never noticed if ads use the name or not.

Manga have managed to fuck up almost every release they've been involved with. I wish we could get an ultimate edition BD with proper subtitles, the extras inexplicably on the DVD but not the Blu-ray, and the 2.0 cut out this whole thing. But that'll never happen.
The actual audience for this (U.S. otaku) is probably fairly small, but I imagine ScarJo (if she's reading this, which she's not, I apologize since I know she hates that name) is a big enough to sell it. Sanders doesn't exactly inspire tons of confidence, but who knows, could be interesting. Wish renewed interest in the property could get us the above. Being a completist means too much money on multiple releases that take up too much space .

Hmmmm, seems peculiar that they would release the first 5 minutes. They better have faith in this just like I do. I'm seeing this next Thursday.

Could be they have tracking info that's not where they want it to be.
Also, I had read they're not doing press screenings for this which is never a good thing.

The commissars of political correctness on Facebook are hitting this film hard for casting Scarlett Johansson instead of an Asian actress, despite the fact that the character is a cyborg and the film would be a hard sell for non-anime fans without a known female action star in the role. Besides, both original creators, Mamoru Oshii (director of the first anime film and its direct sequel) and Masamune Shirow (author of the manga), are delighted that ScarJo was cast and don't understand the "controversy" at all.

This movie probably has a $60M or $100M budget. I'm not aware of any Asian actress who could make those numbers work. If it weren't for the lead, the best this thing could get it $10M or $20M, and it'd end up feeling like one of those atrocious Japanese manga adaptations.
