I was listening to an entertainment podcast recently where the guys were talking about Johnny Depp and one said that no actor has made more terrible major studio pictures than Depp; that he has made more awful films than even Adam Sandler yet nobody ever calls him out on it. I think he might have been right.
The goodwill from Gilbert Grape, Benny & Joon and the first Pirates movie really have carried him for a long, long time.

I definitely agree that Depp has been coasting for quite a while. Truthfully I've never really liked him all that much. He's been in some good films but it seems like he really was on top of his game in the nineties when he and Burton did films like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and Sleepy Hollow. He's done other good films too but those are the ones that stand out to me. I think that he's let the more outlandish roles take over and a lot of times I just don't care for what he does.

I wouldn't call playing Whitey Bulger in Black Mass "coasting". He was excellent in the part.

Granted, he has made a lot of crap in the past 10-12 years, but I thought that Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, The Lone Ranger, Tusk and Black Mass were all pretty good.

Yeah but parts like he had in Black Mass are few and far between for him now days. I personally thought the rest of the stuff you named to be pretty crappy. His part in Tusk was kind of interesting but only for how strange it was. I think somewhere along the line he got too far into the wacky parts and he sort of plays the same character to varying degrees in most films.

I liked the previous trailer enough that I was going to give it a chance but that was really bad. Big, big fan of Smith's podcasts and 70% of his film work.
