44% at the moment.

I started rewatching the recut version the other night, just watching That Yellow Bastard. This makes me want to read the comics again.

Not a single theatre in my area has it listed for 2D. Ugh.

I haven't been terribly excited for this ever since I heard there were not one but TWO new stories in it. Miller hasn't written anything worth a damn in a lot of years. I'll still see it, but my hopes aren't too high.

Yeah I'm really not very excited about this either. It seems like this is being made way too late. I like Rodriguez and the first film was great but this just isn't getting me hyped much.

I wonder if Bob & Harvey are considering cutting off the cash flow to Rodriguez.

In my area a lot of theaters are only showing it once a day in 2D.

I'm planning on catching a Sunday matinee with a friend and the earliest showings are 3D. Blah, who said 3D doesn't affect people who dislike it?

They did a long time ago. They're still hitched to this one as far as the rights go as is Rodriguez's ex-wife which is the real reason why this has taken 9 years to be made. Same goes for the 4th Spy Kids. He can't revisit these existing series without the Weinsteins and his ex-wife getting their cuts.

After this I'm sure he'll be back to trying to figure out a way to shoot Machete Kills In Space in front of a green blanket hanging from his back hard clothesline before you know it.

I feel bad because I like the guy. I feel like Tarantino dabbled in the Grindhouse aesthetic and kept a few elements of it around since (and to be fair, he'd done it before too) whereas Rodriguez has decided to cling to it to hide any shortcomings that pop up in his movies. You're kinda above criticism when you make intentionally poorly-written and poorly-acted movies with a low-budget exploitation look, but in this case he actually has to follow up a good movie with a good sequel.

And by the way... how is Machete Kills still a $20 Blu on Amazon? I'd buy the shit out of it at $7.

Re: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (Rodriguez & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

I watched the first Sin City the other night and fell asleep.

It just hasn't held up very well. And the acting was astounding bad which I completely didn't recall until rewatching it.

Even with all the mentioned violence and breasts, I just can't get excited for this one.

Dropping to 42% on RT.

I did the same last week, watched Sin City again. Kind of bummed it doesn't hold up too well anymore. I fast forwarded past some parts. Alas. I'll still see this one at some point.

Re: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (Rodriguez & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Sin City had stylized acting which generally does come off as cheese unless you're really into it. Spider-man did something similar.

I like Richard Roeper's quote on rotten tomatoes for this sequel:

"This is one badass movie."

Looks like I'll end up seeing this most likely this weekend. I'm going to pick up a BD at Best Buy that comes with the Fandango Cash.

I haven't seen the first one since that elaborate 2-disc SE DVD came out. I'm surprised to hear it hasn't held up.

But here's the thing, Tarantino never made a poorly written or poorly acted movie just to make it more grindhouse. He loves those grindhouse movies, and realizes that they had less than stellar scripts and acting, but is also too good of a filmmaker to deliberately do those things himself, because he knows that the reason people forgive the shortcomings of those movies is because they're so much fun and everyone involved was doing the best they could with limited resources. If you deliberately make a bad movie with bad writing and bad acting, then you've just made a bad movie, and Rodriguez doesn't get that.

Yeah I sort of agree. I watched the original Sin City again and while there are some cool aspects it isn't quite as good as I remembered it being. I don't hate it but I definitely don't love it either.

Yeah, it's ridiculous that IMDB has the first Sin City rated at 8.2/10. It was cool at first but a bit too dark and violent.

Re: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (Rodriguez & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

For me it isn't about it being too dark or violent. I just felt like it was too much style over substance and just hasn't aged that well. Honestly I don't really like Frank Miller that much in general anymore. Aside from Batman: Year One I think his works are largely overrated.

Dark Knight Returns and Daredevil are still brilliant.

I feel like The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most overrated graphic novels of all time personally, but I know I'm in the minority on that.

Yes, they are, but I'm growing to think that Miller used up his whole bag of tricks there, and kept applying that approach when it wasn't as narratively or thematically appropriate in future. That said, I remember when I first discovered stuff like him, Moore, and Vertigo, just how invigorating and innovative it felt to me. Wonder if I was just young and found it new, or if it really was a pretty damned amazing era?

Re: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (Rodriguez & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

A lot of Moore's stuff holds up well if you ask me. Miller seems like he had a few things that made him really popular but a lot of his work hasn't held up well.
