If Clayface is to be the villain of The Batman II, I'm guessing he'll be something like Darkman crossed with Hush.

Well, here's Shazam versus Black Adam. Just not how we wanted it.

It seems the rumor mill is whispering that the first chapter of Gunn's DCU is an adaptation of Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier.

It’s really unfortunate the way things panned out for both Shazam and Black Adam. I didn’t see Fury of the Gods yet but I liked the other two films respectively. I do think Shazam! was better though and Black Adam was more of a guilty pleasure surprise.

If Dwayne Johnson would have put his ego aside and been willing to be a part of the Shazam films (probably the second one) it would have benefited both characters and we probably would have gotten a more successful film, and plus they could have done more with both characters afterwards. Instead you got a film that underperformed and one that tanked.

New Frontier would be an interesting way to start the DC Cinematic Universe, but it would be a very ambitious project and tricky to pull off.

I mean New Frontier works as an elseworlds (and an awesome one at that), I'm not sure it works as something to base an entire cinematic universe on unless you're just using the basic plot or something.

I doubt it'll be a 1:1 adaptation (when have any of these live action adaptations been that?) but rather that Gunn's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters will follow the multi-step approach to The New Frontier's story that eventually leads to a Justice League team up/formation. I seriously doubt these movies/series will span 1945 - 1955. Although they could easily be set decades apart. We do know the Amazons series is set thousands of years in the past. But I bet everything revolving around Superman and Batman will take place during the 2020s.

Right, I guess that's what I mean... the best parts of New Frontier besides the art is how it goes from golden age to silver age and ties everything together into the formation of the JL. Now it would be incredible if Gunn starts with a universe where the JSA exists but disbanded, and there are other existing super heroes that are basically forced out before the coming of these new heroes, but just moving things up to the 2000s.

Actually Blue Beetle should be a decent indicator to see how much of a "legacy hero" they make him.

That would be a somewhat interesting twist to have had the JSA exist at one point but they’re disbanded and to have the new age of heroes rise and form the JLA. I could see that working.

Welp, it seems James Gunn has been reading my posts in DC groups. Because I've been saying for weeks that the DCU should stat with either the JSA or at least The New Frontier

I think New Frontier works even without the JSA, thematically. If you go from a more cynical, distrustful era (Hmm... kinda like the present time, either in the real world or the DCEU) to a brighter, more optimistic and unified one.

Re: Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

Gunn said he and DC have had fun conversations with Marvel about a crossover. That would be cool as shit but the only way I ever see something like this happen is in animated form.

Looks like Peacemaker season 2 isn’t happening until after 2025 according to Gunn.

Meaning they'll start filming in 2025 or it will be released in 2025?

Who knows. He needs to write it first. Could mean filming in 2025 for 2026 or 2027 release. These shows take like 2 years to film now.

That’s a long ass wait for a new season of Peacemaker. I get that Gunn is busy but that kind of sucks.

If Gunn wasn’t the writer, director and show runner by himself then maybe it could have come out sooner. You’re looking at 3 maybe 4 more years potentially. Hope Cena stays healthy.

Re: Future DC Studios projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

WBD can't seem to catch a break.

Four Democratic lawmakers want the Justice Department to investigate Warner Bros Discovery, claiming that the merged company has harmed workers and reduced consumer choice.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-CA), Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) wrote in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and DOJ antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter that the merger “appears to have enabled” the company to “adopt potentially anticompetitive practices that reduce consumer choice and harm workers in affected labor markets.”

WarnerMedia and Discovery were combined last year in a transaction that was not challenged by the DOJ after a review.

“The company has the incentive and ability to eliminate broad swaths of its workforce, leaving workers with fewer choices for employment and advancement,” the lawmakers wrote in their letter (read it here). They cited the layoffs over the past year, including the shutdown of CNN+, as well as later cuts at CNN and in areas like ad sales.

It would be unusual for the Justice Department to essentially reopen a review of a merger so shortly after it has been completed, but the lawmakers appear to have been bolstered by Kanter’s comments on the DOJ’s concerns over the impact of consolidation on content creators and workers, not just on consumers.

Last year, the Justice Department successfully challenged the proposed Penguin Random House merger with Simon & Schuster on the grounds that it would ultimately harm authors. After a federal judge ruled in the government’s favor, the companies abandoned that transaction.

Arguing that the merger has led to the “hollowing out” of an “iconic American studio,” the lawmakers also cited the cancellation of projects and the removal of content from the HBO Max platform. They wrote that “audiences will never see such projects like Batgirl, a $90 million film that was canceled while ‘deep into post-production,’ despite consumer outcry, reportedly to allow WBD to claim a tax break.”

A Warner Bros Discovery spokesperson declined comment. The company is not unique in embarking on recent mass layoffs. Disney last month started the process of cutting 7,000 from its workforce. And amid a retrenchment in streaming, other platforms including Netflix have been canceling projects and series.

The cancellation of Batgirl got huge attention last August, leading to some anger in the fanbase. Peter Safran, the new co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, said in February that the movie was “not releasable.”

The lawmakers also referred to plans to raise the cost of HBO Max. “Currently, the plan for the combined streaming service is to keep an ad-supported plan at ten dollars and an ad-free plan between $15 and $16 a month. However, WBD is offering a premium plan for consumers that will cost $20 a month ‘for viewers who want to view HBO’s signature shows in as high a quality as possible.’ This leaves questions unanswered about whether a lower-priced platform will have reduced quality from the current product, while consumers are paying the same price and lack the transparency necessary to fully evaluate the plans and their relative prices.”

Warner Bros Discovery is planning to unveil its new strategy for direct-to-consumer streaming next Wednesday.

The Russo Bros. did a pretty involved interview with Zack Snyder.

Looks like DC Studios will not be participating in SD Comic Con this year. So no big Hall H Superman and Lois intros.
