Studios get 80-90% of first weekend gross (in North America at least), meaning Disney/Marvel are walking away with somewhere around $80M domestically. The number decreases each week as the film is in theaters thus why theaters prefer films with legs.

And charge so much for concessions, as they make nothing off the big releases and most are gone within a few weeks.

I don't pay for concessions, cinemas must hate me.

That's actually what I was wondering on the Transformers front; did the Chinese government take most of the profits?

I guess the biggest test will be next weekend to see how much it will drop off. I'm thinking maybe a 40% drop and TMNT will open a distant second. Avengers had a 51% drop. At this point, I think GOTG is set up for a lot more repeat viewings than Avengers.

I just saw a TV ad with the
Spoiler:
Dancing Mini-Groot
scene in it, so it seems we hardly need to spoiler it anymore.

That's kind of lame to have it in TV spots, it's a cute addition that relates to the end of the movie but would arguably spoil it.

Spoiler:
Since someone seeing that would expect to see a mini Groot, and would make it easy to put two and two together as far as Groot's death goes.

You have to remember the Thurs night grosses are becoming more prominent, and being counted in the wknd....so the real 3day was more like 82m. 40mill 2nd wknd would be a huge win, but we'll see.

The film pulled in $32M on Saturday. If you remove the $11M from Thursday screenings, it technically did $27M on Friday. That's a great jump for a Friday-to-Saturday in which most blockbusters drop.

I never understood subtracting Thursday grosses, since I would imagine the majority of people that catch those late night/midnight showings would just be rushing to see it on Friday if those showings didn't exist.

That is how I view it, but it isn't how a lot of box office sites view it (they'll view it as $38M on Friday, regardless). So it may or may not get coverage as a great hold at 40m or not. As stupid as I think Thursday grosses are, I do get it as it was their "compromise" to curb midnight screenings.

However, it also had an A cinemascore, A+ under 25 -- which as stupid as the rating system is, tends to bode well for movies.

$11.7m on Monday, it's tough to compare that to anything since it's still Summer and schools are out. However, this should crush Captain American: Winter Soldier (which grossed $6.2m on its first Monday) because of the Summer boost. So if it has the same weekend losses as Winter Soldier, roughly 56.6% next weekend and around 40% there on out, it could pull around $300m.

After its first monday, Winter Soldier stood at $101,243,273. GotG stood at $106,043,239.

Excluding Memorial day, the highest Monday take for any film this summer.

It can fall as much as 63% and still be likely to crack $250m.

schools aren't out everywhere. many of the schools in AZ are back. just depends on where you are.

True enough, it's August 18th here.

Godzilla finally crossed $200m domestic.

GotG made another $11m on Tuesday

why wouldn't it? Cap was a good story and nice Marvel movie, but didn't have the levity or fun this has. and WOM has been insane.

Because after Cap was released everyone was calling THAT the best Marvel movie ever and also had excellent word of mouth. :) And I mentioned in another post somewhere, of it being an established brand and franchise coming off the Avengers. For it to be doubling up Cap on weekdays is impressive.

Kids everywhere were still in school in the first week of April though. Most places kids are not in school during the first week of August.

How could it not? It had a $100m budget and is being beaten by Lucy. However, it's doing respectable business overseas. Guardians of the Galaxy was released in a smart window, it has minimal competition and the last 2 weeks of Summer vacation are usually when people take some time off to hang with the family, last minute trips, etc; It isn't quite as good as the Winter Break window (with Xmas and New Years) but imo it's underutilized, but won't be for much longer.

that's true. Cap is established and did have very good WOM. but was lifeless compared to GotG.

Had Captain opened in the summer it would have pulled much larger weekday grosses, which is why the summers are so damn crowded.
