I was shocked when I found out that the 3D was a post-conversion job, as I thought the 3D was really superior.

Movies with a lot of CG tend to post well, the best 3D I've seen in a movie thus far has been a post-conversion job (Gravity)

UPDATED, Friday, 7: AM: The Star Lord has arrived — I’m speaking not of the industry’s new superstar Chris Pratt, but of writer/director James Gunn as Guardians of the Galaxy has taken off as late nights soared to $11.2M last night which is north of Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s Thursday’s for Disney/Marvel and for the rest of the industry who is laying hopes that the summer offering will have a strong multiple. It started its late nights at 7 p.m. The Captain went onto gross $95M in its opening weekend.

I agree, that was a great scene. But Rocket's overall attitude and wanting constantly to get people's body parts was hilarious.

I fully expected for Rocket and Groot to be the more annoying fan-service-y parts of the film. For them to not only be hilarious (expected) but to also cause empathy is an achievement.

Haven't seen it yet, but love this pullquote from RT:
"It's like watching a 'Star Wars' movie filled with nothing but Han Solos."

I reserve 5-star ratings for what I consider to be absolute classics, which this very well could be, but I went with 4 1/2 because sometimes my elation after seeing a great film boosts the score a bit. I'm planning to see this a second time, at which point I'll be able to firmly give it a lifetime rating.
Really, though, I can't think of much to complain about here. Gunn nailed it.

Absolutely a fun time to be had @ the movies!
what an incredible way to cap off a summer movie season (for me anyway, sans Sin City: ADTKF). just a perfect blend of action, drama, comedy & a bit of romance. Everything just worked, just clicked on all cylinders. the cast was fantastic, the effects were fantastic. Gunn & Co. made you feel for a tree! a tree!!
Chris Pratt nailed Peter Quill (or at least what i think Starlord would be). who knew Dave Bautista could act let alone get timing down so perfectly with his comedy jibes??
just what a summer popcorn movie is all about...Heart, soul and some damn fine explosions!!

IMAX 3D is legit and here to stay. It's truly a wonderful experience just shy of reaching Gravity's high standard. Hopefully all you 3D haters can shut up for awhile.

Fucking great film.
The last end credit bit is for the fans and it was awesome to see what really is in this universe. Best MCU film.
Solid film. Easily topping The Avengers. Beat out TWS as the best Marvel film.
The intro is kind of ballsy for a big studio film like this. Considering how pussified parents and studios have become.
Easily the MCU's edgiest film. And I'm glad they dared to take risks on this one. Soooo much awesome.
4.5 right here.

I've had time to digest the film a little and I would say that my only major complaint is that Ronan The Accuser was such a badass that was underutilized. Okay, so he's super fucking strong and? Show me more
I think Pace was awesome as Ronan but he doesn't really show much outside of being really strong, cool looking, and intimidating.

Blah blah blah this is your opinion blah blah...
Now that's out of the way, you're full of shit. Nobody in their right mind can call this movie better than Winter Soldier. If you do, then years of heavy drinking and drug use have taken its toll.

Agreed. Personally, I think GoG IS better than Avengers but NOT Winter Soldier. Top-3, though.
Here's my list in order:
Winter Soldier
Iron Man
GoG
Avengers
Iron Man 3
Thor Dark World
Incredible Hulk
Thor
Iron Man 2
Captain America

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy (Gunn, 2014) — The Reviews Thread
Just saw this.
Cons: The 70's song soundtrack was a bit gimmicky--yes, it worked okay in this film, but I would hope this type of thing isn't a trend, as it could get old really fast. Also, some of the non-humorous dialogue was a bit stiff and expository here and there.
Those are minor nitpicks, however----another winner from Marvel. Especially compared to something like Man of Steel, this was bright and fun rather than dour and gloomy--yet it still had some depth and characters you cared about. As a 35+ year (casual) Marvel reader, it's just satisfying to see their rich universe brought to life and treated respectfully. I always liked their cosmic characters, and this really opened up that world and made you want to see more. I think it points to the great resource Marvel has with all their years of talented storytelling from creative people in the comics----as opposed to something like the Transformers franchise, whose basic backstory was written by the toy marketing department of Hasbro (or whoever). Great seeing the Nova Corps in action! Great action and big cinematic scenes and sci-fi images, good humor, and distinct, likable characters----a fun ride.
But how did sweet Karen Gillan get so evil?
As far as ranking this one, it's hard for me, and I think it points to the consistent quality and diversity of Marvel's output. I thought The Winter Soldier was excellent, but it's hard for me to say GOTG was better or worse, as it was just a different movie with a very different tone.

While I loved TWS, I think GotG was a better movie .

This one takes a risk, it's edgier, it's out of the norm in a lot of things, thought the script was tighter based off what we got here, and Gunn's direction was very well honed.

Totally agreeing with this statement. CA:TWS made for a great HBO pilot that could lead to a Capt America series, but it didn't get me the way this movie did. I was expecting the great action and comedy, but didn't expect to connect with the lead heroes and I really wasn't expecting the emotional scenes hitting me so hard. I'm already over any Star Wars and Treks from here on, this is the space saga I'm gonna connect to. Marvel would be insane not to capitalize on a Groot/Rocket prequel after this. I already have plans to see it a few more times this weekend. Perfect summer fun.

I don't think we need a prequel film of them. This film kind of appropriately establishes them all and that's enough. Not that I didn't love them already but... I'd rather more characters to be explored than those guys get their own film.
