Surprised there wasn't a script on this earlier. About Alan Turing and cracking the Enigma machine. It was on the Blacklist in 2011 or so, good script.

This is getting some Oscar buzz, but then again, so did The Fifth Estate.

Yeah but the movie itself is getting oscar buzz, the Fifth Estate never had that.

Re: The Imitation Game (2014 D: Morten Tyldum, S: Cumberbatch, Knightley)

Saw it tonight. Fantastic movie, a leading awards contender for sure. Cumberbatch with by far the best performance of his career and has as good a chance at winning the Best Actor Oscar as any other contender. Best Picture contender too.

I got "A Beautiful Mind" vibe while watching this because of the similar story (biopic about a tortured mathematical genius). IMO, Imitation Game is better than A Beautiful Mind. As we know, "Mind" went on to win BP, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress. I wouldn't be surprised if The Imitation Game took home all those awards.

Probably won't be my favorite movie of the year, but a Top 5 spot seems certain.

I'm sure it's the "recency effect" but this was the best movie I've seen in 2014. Just a great performance by Cumberbatch. I too got the A Beautiful Mind vibe but that's one of my favorite movies so that wasn't a bad thing.

This is the one movie from this season I'm most anxious to see. But since I don't go out to the movies unless I absolutely have to (other people needing something to do), I'll be anxiously waiting for it to hit Bd.

Agreed with you on all points. This was an incredible movie. It's my #2 of the year, behind only Boyhood.

Re: The Imitation Game (2014 D: Morten Tyldum, S: Cumberbatch, Knightley)

I'm not really a Benedict Cumberbatch fan, but I wanted to see a film about Alan Turing and his efforts to beat the Enigma machine in WWII, so off I went.

The film, overall, is buoyed by Cumberbatch's performance of the eccentric Turing, and the supporting cast (Mark Strong, Keira Knightley, and Matthew Goode) is solid. The script gives the viewer insight to Turing's past, how it shapes his personality, and the race against the clock to use his mind to overcome the odds in decrypting the German's Enigma machine which allowed them to broadcast war plans and directives without the Allies being able to comprehend them. Each day lost in decryption failure meant lives were lost to the war.

I give it 3.5 stars, or a grade of B+.

Re: The Imitation Game (2014 D: Morten Tyldum, S: Cumberbatch, Knightley)

Loved this. Of all the movies likely to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, I hope this wins. I hope Richard Linklater gets the Oscar for Best Director though. If he doesn't I'm hoping Boyhood gets Best Picture even though I liked The Imitation Game more. Its just Linklater getting award recognition is so long overdue.

Also it bums me out that this thread hasn't even managed a second page yet.

Non fanboy movies don't get much traction here. Upload a Star Wars trailer and you'll get 10 pages though!

Ain't that the truth. No wonder people have a hard time finding the good movies if they don't live in a big city, but by God, any stupid bullshit with explosions, car chases or monsters in it will be on 3,500 screens.

I have never cared for Cumberbatch. But I saw this anyway, and it was incredibly good. Glad I didn't let my distaste for the lead actor scare me off.

Yeah that stuff drives me nuts too but it makes sense, people like spending money to see spectacles on the big screen, Imitation Game probably loses very little from being watched on a home theater versus say Gravity which loses everything when viewed on a smaller TV.

My local AMC actually does have this. Once these movies get some Oscar buzz, they usually get a little more distribution, even if only briefly. But yeah, they're always claiming that big movie X made a bajillion dollars on 3,500 screens whereas little art house movie #7 only made a little bit when it's only playing 50 miles from nowhere. Skews the hell out of the box office, I'll bet.

Re: The Imitation Game (2014 D: Morten Tyldum, S: Cumberbatch, Knightley)

Saw this on Sunday. Really, really liked it. Well made, well acted and interesting. Added bonus : saw it in our new local theaters with assigned seating and electric recliners = Awesome.

Loved that not only was Charles Dance in this, he plays his British commander exactly as Tywin Lannister, condescension, loathing and all. Any bonus Tywin is good news in my book -- and it actually worked well for this part.

Saw it. Very well made movie with great performances. Didn't know Turing Machines were the basis for modern computers. Amazing what this guy contributed. I hope we get to see more of Cumberbatch in mainstream releases, though I like him as Sherlock most of all.

He's cast as Dr Strange. We'll keep seeing him in mainstream movies.

Re: The Imitation Game (2014 D: Morten Tyldum, S: Cumberbatch, Knightley)

He was in War Horse, Star Trek Into Darkness, 12 Years A Slave, Played Smaug in the Hobbit films (MoCap and voice), and other not as big attention roles.

Yeah. I really like it when actors like him and others (looking at you, Hiddleston) are able to a grand variation of roles.

....would be neat if Hiddleston and Cumberbatch meet up again in Infinity War possibly. They were enjoyable to see in War Horse.
