Hmm I don’t know. I like Black’s style generally and while it’s what he’s known for I kind of hoped he was just a fan who wanted to make a good Predator film without necessarily sticking with his action comedy style. I’ll give it a shot but feel like this may be the wrong direction to go.

Some leaked details a friend with insider knowledge gave me confirm the story centers around a kid who, I believe, finds a Predator mask and wears it on Halloween. The mask has something inside it - code, writing, etc - the Predators need so they decide to converge on this small town to get the mask back.

P2 was great. Danny Glover's low tone, mumbling dialog was top notch....
I hope the comedic value is minimal. I get his style and enjoy his movies, but this isn't the universe to use it IMO as a Predator fan.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Nothing about this after “Shane Black” has me interested. I was excited to hear he was taking the helm, but every piece of news has gotten progressively worse and worse. I am a huge Predator fan and from what we have been given so far, I have no desire to see this. My bar is pretty low according to you guys — I like Predators and Alien Resurrection. But the sounds of this? Fuck no. It is going to bury the franchise for another 10-15 years.
First Alien, then Predator. Oh well, we still have the originals, right?
You know, at this point Fox should just give a huge middle finger to Disney over their Marvel squabbles; team up with WB and DC and give us a Batman vs. Predator movie.

Black does have a good track record and has turned out some underrated gems (Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang). The original Predator does have its share of “comedy” (as any good action flick should), but it does not and should not have a “comedic tone”. The fact that test audiences are walking out and thinking “comedy” does not fare well for Predator fans IMO.
Didn’t Star Wars just nip this shit in the bud?

I already mentioned this in a previous thread, but I doubt it. Most likely the original contracts revert Marvel's characters back to them in the event of a sale. Given the right issues that happened when Superman was released Marvel would have taken care not to get into a rights fight for their characters with DC/WB.

Predator 2 is one of my all time favorite sequels of all time...love the film. It is also so nasty and grindhouse, and that cast (Bill Paxton, Gary Busey, Ruben Blades, Danny Glover, Maria Conchita Alonso). Such a fun action film and it has a couple of scenes that are just beyond cool...the scene where Glover is chasing the Predator through the apartments at the end sequence and the subway scene where the Predator breaks his rule of taking out anyone with a weapon when he scans Alonso's character and realizes she is pregnant.
I found Predators to be bland, not horrible...just not what I thought it would be, so here's to hoping.

With regards to Predator, I'm more concerned with modifying the mythology, even though that's been handled pretty loosely as it is.

She was kind of shoehorned into every sequel. Every time Weaver said she wouldn’t come back for another one, so each time the premise was ready to go without her. Aliens was set to be about the colonial Marines meeting the aliens. Alien 3 was about the alien getting loose in a penal colony. Alien: Resurrection was going to have a clone, but it was supposed to be Newt in the first treatments. There is a reason you could take Ripley out of every sequel with a small amount of rewriting and still have the movie work — she wasn’t there in the first place.
I would say having to redo the story to accommodate Weaver (or the studio execs who backed up the money truck) is shoehorning her in. I never thought about it, but she’s kind of like Ridley Scott: seems to hate the property but won’t let go of it.
This goes back to that debate we have had so many times in recent years with so many properties: does reusing the same protagonists expand your universe or shrink it? My belief is it shrinks it and cheapens the source material.

Maybe shoehorned wasn't the best term, unneeded might be better, but Abob explains it well enough.

I bet "Predators" from 2010 ends up being better than this.
Shane Black is overrated in my eyes, certainly as a director. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was great, but Iron Man 3 was garbage and The Nice Guys was a disappointment to me.
And everything I've read about this makes me think Black is going to be 1 for 4 as a director.
