Documentary on John Milius
 

Just saw this incredible documentary about John Milius (simply titled "Milius") in Netflix. It focuses on his unparalleled writing skills that somehow takes after his larger-than-life persona.

I knew he was responsible for a large number of iconic lines in films (such as Apocalypse Now) and his limited stint as a director (Conan the Barbarian). But I wasn't aware of the massive influence he has over a vast number of filmmakers, studio bosses and producers. The roster of those in the industry interviewed for the documentary were staggering (S.Spielberg, M.Scorsese, G.Lucas, F.Coppola, C.Eastwood, M.Mann, A.Schwarzenegger, S.Stallone, Harrison Ford, etc); who are not only in awe of Milius' talent but his unwavering drive to be unconforming.

Who is the director ? Do they talk about Red Dawn?

Don't know who the director(s) are for the doc but they did touch on Red Dawn extensively, and how it affected Milius' career.

I caught this on Netflix a week or so ago, incredibly well done documentary IMO. I really enjoyed it.

To me, he'll always be the writer of the "Indianapolis speech."

I bet a lot of us watched it recently because of Netflix.

This was really good. I really like Milius' movies. I knew most of what they talked about already. But I didn't know about his stroke. I figured that he just quieted down like most older Hollywood people.

Really good. I'm not a big fan of him personally but do like him. Seriously didn't know he had a stroke. That actually made sense as to why I didn't hear about him for a long time.

Milius wrote it, then Shaw re-wrote it and shortened it down for the time needed for the scene. So it was Milius's idea to use it in the movie, but it was Shaw that created the memorable monologue.

Milius directed Conan the Barbarian. I definitely respect this movie wholeheartedly for just ushering the awesomeness of 80s sword and sorcery flicks, and it is part of Arnie's creme de la creme trinity of this, T1, and Predator. Although Arnie actually acted iike Conan more in Predator lol.

Another enthusiast vote in favor of the Milius documentary. I especially liked Charlie Sheen's anecdote about how Milius freaked out his father by brandishing a pistol when he was recording the voice-overs for Apocalypse Now.

I loved this doc, too. Milius had such a commanding presence, but it's very clear why he never made it to the majors like Spielberg and Lucas - he's a stubborn bastard. The end was very bittersweet, learning of his stroke and lack of abilities these days. I really hope he can regain himself and give us some more great work.
