Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (12/15/17, W/D: Rian Johnson)
http://www.deadline.com/2014/06/star...xt-two-movies/
EXCLUSIVE: Rarely have I seen the revival of a film franchise stir so much fervor as Star Wars, among hot young filmmakers who grew up loving George Lucas’ original film trilogy. In a bombshell move, I’m told that Lucasfilm is making a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. Essentially, that means that the intention is for Johnson to take the baton from JJ Abrams, who has gotten the space franchise off the ground and is right now helming Episode VII. I don’t know too much more at this point, but it is in keeping with Disney and Lucasfilm’s strategy of entrusting the venerable franchise to the best and brightest writers and directors, including the spinoff films that are being directed by Chronicle‘s Josh Trank and Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards.
rian johnsonJohnson will take over the core film franchise, and he’ll get started quickly and this will be his preoccupation for quite awhile. Johnson made his directing debut on the respected indie Brick, and then jumped to mainstream science fiction by writing and directing Looper, an inventive time travel thriller that starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. It would be hard to imagine him taking on a higher profile challenge than two consecutive Star Wars films. I’ll tell you more when I know it. Johnson is repped by CAA.

I was hoping to see Duncan Jones do one of them. Maybe he can do a sequel to one of the spinoffs instead.

Cool. He seems like a good choice. I'm also always up for Hollywood giving big movies to the little guys.
His movies (and even the Breaking Bad episode) have the slowest pacing. They've been fine, rewarding movies. But slow pacing is the first thing I associate with his work.

Only his Fly episode of Breaking Bad was noticeably slow, as it was a budget saver episode so it wasn't really his fault. I never finished Brick because yeah, that was slow, and not particularly interesting in the first 45 minutes or so.

Keep in mind it's just a rumor at this point.

Fuckin' A. That is so awesome. I love his work. LOVED Brick (we really need a BD of that). And totally liked his others.
I'm actually happy for Johnson.

The Wrap says he will write/direct 8, and write a treatment for 9... may not direct 9. http://www.thewrap.com/rian-johnson-...s-8-but-not-9/
I think he's a good choice.

I seem to remember liking Brick, and I thought Looper was just ok but still above average, so I can live with this.
I do like that they're going with genre directors with some chops rather than complete unknowns so far.

Only movie I've seen of his is Looper and I liked that a lot. I think he's a good choice if this rumor turns out to be true.

I must've missed the memo. Is she playing Elektra?
In regards to the directing choice for Episode VIII, I'm all for out of the box choices so I'll give Disney the benefit of the doubt. Just hope it has a better Third Act than Looper did.
