Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (12/15/17, W/D: Rian Johnson)

It was interesting to read Hamill's thoughts on Han's death:

“Now, remember, one of the plots in the earlier films was the telepathic communication between my sister and me,” Hamill said. “So I thought, Carrie will sense that Han is in danger and try to contact me. And she won’t succeed, and, in frustration, she’ll go herself. Then we’re in the situation where all three of us are together, which is one of my favorite things in the original film, when we were on the Death Star. It’s just got a fun dynamic to it. So I thought it would have been more effective, and I still feel this way, though it’s just my opinion, that Leia would make it as far as she can, and, right when she is apprehended, maybe even facing death—Ba-boom! I come in and blow the guy away and the two of us go to where Han is facing off with his son, but we’re too late. The reason that’s important is that we witness his death, which carries enormous personal resonance into the next picture. As it is, Chewie’s there, and how much can you get out of [passable Chewbacca wail] ‘Nyaaarghhh!’ and two people who have known Han for, what, 20 minutes?
I don't know if I agree with the exact scenario he laid out, but not getting to see Luke, Leia and Han together in a movie primarily built on nostalgia and fan service felt like a real rip-off to me.

Our first son was born just before The Force Awakens was released. We were going to name him Finn until I realized a character was named that in the newest Star Wars flick. Knowing certain Star Wars fans, we decided not to name him Finn.

I can just imagine when my son starts school he'll be in class with a bunch of Kylos and Khalisees.

Fisher completed her part in Episode VIII late last summer, when principal photography on the film wrapped. “She was having a blast,” said Kennedy. “The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!’ Because Harrison was front and center on VII, and Mark is front and center on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.

That would have been pretty damn boring. I like Leia and all but the focus of the movie? Would not excite me.

Am I the only one relieved IX won't be focused on Princess Leia? She's a great secondary character but not my choice for the primary plot. Personally I think that line by Kennedy is conjecture and said only out of respect for Fisher... Carrie was a weak spot in TFA, imo.

would've loved to have seen Leia take on an Admiral Akbar role during a massive space battle in episode 9.

We still don't know if they have scenes together in VIII, but bringing Leia into the Kylo Ren drama had the potential for some really powerful material. I would love to know how it would have gone if they didn't have to scrap their plans for IX. That was the one aspect of the story I was most interested in seeing play out.

But the whole point of the movie was to find Luke, and the payoff is the ending when Rey sees him there alone on the island. If Luke & Leia arrive at Starkiller Base when Han confronts Kylo Ren, then you have to essentially change the whole plot of the film. Nobody has been able to contact Luke (even Leia) for years, and there is a reason he went MIA that will be talked about in Episode 8.

The movie and trilogy is still essentially about Rey, and JJ talked about how if Luke comes in at any moment during the last half hour (to possibly save the day during the Lightsaber Fight with Kylo) then he overshadows the whole movie because he's that big of a character.

When I originally read the spoiler about the ending and Luke being in the movie for 30 seconds, I was really angry. But I have to say that the ending gets me everytime as it is one of my favorite moments of the Saga, IMO.

One word:

Underwhelming.

Underwhelming teaser, underwhelming featurette.

But just remember the Prequels trailers and Behind the Scenes stuff were always great.

I liked the teaser. Not sure what people expected from it.

My body, mind and soul are ready for this film.

SDCC next week should have the trailer. Hopefully.

I liked the teaser and poster, too.

They're reportedly not doing a Star Wars panel this year, so I kinda doubt it.

Nice behind the scenes video... they're really playing this close to the vest. Wouldn't be surprised if we get just the one full trailer in Sept/Oct, the start of pre-sales (similar to TFA) We'll get a barrage of TV spots leading up to the release, plus the international stuff... but, I kinda like not having much to go on right now.

There's really no reason anymore for Disney and it's properties to spend money to go to SDCC when they make a ton of money with their own D23.

Do they really need to create a buzz with this movie? They don't need to spend extra. Just release some trailers and word-of-mouth via social media will do the rest.

For what it's worth, I think Adventure Time owns the name Finn (over Star Wars).

Could have named him Finn Theuman [Last Name].
