Grunberg is good friends with JJ Abrams, and Abrams tries to stick him in everything he does, no matter how small a part.

John Boyega (Finn) says they will start principal photography in a few weeks.
I'm looking forward to seeing Johnson's interpretation of the material. He's a relatively new director, so this is a fucking huge movie for him to tackle. But on the plus side, this is awesome to have a relatively young filmmaker give a fresh take on the material.

I'm so psyched that the wait is only 18 months. Really excited for Johnson to be working on this.

Episode VII wrapped filming November 2014. It was a 6 month shoot.

Jeff Sneider of The Wrap has said that Bel Powley of "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" is up one of the female roles. He also mentioned that Gina Rodriguez is still in the running. They start shooting by the end of the month, so there should be official announcements soon.
There are also reports that the set designers have recreated parts of Skellig Michael on the backlot at Pinewood, including the stone huts. There are rumors that the Dingle Peninsula and Ceann Sibeal in West Kerry will be used as stand-in locations for Luke's island (named Ahch-To).

This is true. Because there are a bunch of environmental conditions when filming there, it was more cost-effective to just build a set...they used the same soundstage as the opening battle scenes on Jakku in Episode VII.

When are they ever gonna cast a blonde woman in a Star Wars movie? The only one I can think of is Carrie Fisher's daughter and that was basically a background character.

Jeff Sneider now hears that Rodriguez is out of the running and that an unknown asian actress has landed the role that she and Powley were up for. This could be a caluclated move by Disney to cater to the asian market after The Force Awakens opened so strong in China. It's the second-biggest movie market in the world and a territory that had remained largely out of the loop when it came to the phenomenon of Star Wars (where the prequel trilogy grossed less that $19M combined). Kind of ironic, since 99% of the tie-in merchandise is manufactured over there.
Anyway, he also mentioned that the start of principal photography has been pushed to February. Rian Johnson is supposedly doing last minute rewrites to reduce the role of the new female character(s) in order to give more screentime to our pre-established heroes (Rey, Poe, etc).
