Bridge of Spies (2015, D: Spielberg; W: Coen Bros.) S: Tom Hanks

Spielberg directing a Coen Bros. script?! This I gotta see. Although I have a feeling we'll get a taste when Angelina Jolie's 'Unbroken' comes out. That trailer looks Spielbergian in every way.

DreamWorks and Disney have dated the untitled Tom Hanks-Steven Spielberg Cold War spy thriller for Oct. 16, 2015.

Joel and Ethan Coen came on board last month to write the script for the Cold War project, which Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce with Spielberg. The Coen Brothers, who won screenwriting Oscars for “Fargo” and “No Country for Old Men,” are revising Matt Charman’s script.

The untitled project is based on the true story of James Donovan, who Hanks will portray. Donovan was the American attorney enlisted by the CIA during the Cold War to surreptitiously negotiate the 1962 release of Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 spy plane pilot who was shot down over Russia two years earlier.

Variety reported that Hanks had come on board the project in mid-April.

What happened to Spielberg's American Sniper movie? I read an article on him today and they mentioned this and The BFG, based on the Roald Dahl children's book, coming out within 9 months of each other -- but nothing about American Sniper.

Edit : Looks like he moved on and now it's being directed by Clint. Great - Mr One Take and Print. I'm sure we'll get a high level of authenticity from the guy who just finished a movie where Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons hang out in an area of New Jersey that has the Hollywood Hills in the background.

Amy Ryan will star opposite Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg's untitled Cold War spy thriller.

The actress will play the wife of James Donovan (Hanks), an attorney who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.

Alan Alda, Billy Magnussen and Eve Hewson also are in talks to join the project, which is set to begin production in September and will be shot on location in New York and Berlin.

20th Century Fox is co-financing the film with DreamWorks, and will distribute internationally while Disney will handle domestic distribution.

Spielberg will direct and produce the film with Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger. The executive producers are Adam Somner and Daniel Lupi. Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the script based on an original script by Matt Charman.

The film is slated for release Oct. 16, 2015.

Ryan most recently appeared in Devil's Knot and has several projects coming up, including Birdman, Monster Trucks and Goosebumps. She’s repped by Gersh, Lisa Richards Agency in Ireland and Bloom Hergott.

Alda's recent films include Wanderlust and Tower Heist and he’s currently shooting The Longest Ride. He’s repped by ICM Partners.

Magnussen will play Rapunzel's prince in Disney’s upcoming film Into the Woods. His previous work include The East and The Brass Teapot. He’s repped by BRS/Gage Talent Agency, Authentic Talent and Literary Management and Sloane, Offer.

Hewson appeared in Enough Said and This Must Be the Place, and is repped by UTA and Brillstein.

Speaking with EW, Spielberg shared what brought him to this project:

"This is one of the more astonishing stories about the Cold War I’d ever heard, James Donovan is a hero to me, and Tom made him so completely accessible". He added: "I’ve always wanted to make a spy movie, and this is that and then some."

Russian hackers threaten war if cold war thriller to be released. Although I'm thinking they don't pull the plug on a Spielberg directed/hanks starred film.

I know you're joking, but I can see how this would piss the Russians off. The United States was the bad guy in the U2 incident -- if we'd shot down a Soviet jet over Nebraska, you can bet the Pentagon would've been telling Ike it was a prelude to war and we should launch a preemptive strike -- but what do you think the odds are of Spielberg making a film that suggests the US was in the wrong?

Re: Bridge of Spies (2015, D: Spielberg; W: Coen Bros.) S: Tom Hanks

The new Steven Spielberg film, which reunites the director with star Tom Hanks, was referred to early on as the “Untitled Cold War Thriller,” and then shot under the title St. James Place. But when released in theaters, the movie will be called Bridge of Spies — a more colorful title, to be sure, and one which has its own place in cold war history.

Additionally, John Williams has been confirmed to provide the score for the film, marking the latest collaboration in his long-running partnership with Spielberg.

The title was first confirmed by producer Marc Platt, in an interview with The Daily Pennsylvanian. He simply said “I have a film directed by Steven Spielberg starring Tom Hanks coming out called Bridge of Spies.”

And John Williams fan site JWFN.com has confirmed with the composer’s agency that he will write the score to this film, making it his 27th collaboration with Steven Spielberg.

The film’s title refers to a real bridge that links the outer reaches of former West Berlin to the city center of Potsdam, previously under the control of East Germany. It was dubbed the “bridge of spies” in the ’60s as American and Soviet intelligence organizations performed prisoner exchanges on its expanse.

Officially named the Bridge of Unity, it was eventually re-named Glienicke Bridge in the mid-’80s. The bridge has been seen in other films, and Spielberg’s production used it as a location for this movie.

The film tells the story of the first prisoner exchange on the bridge that led to its colloquial name, as it follows attempts by lawyer James Donovan (Hanks) to negotiate the release of pilot Francis Gary Powers after his plane was shot down in the Soviet Union.

Bridge of Spies was originally written by Matt Charman, with rewrites by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. The cast also features Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, Alan Alda and Eve Hewson. It will be released by Disney’s Touchstone banner on October 16, 2015.

Re: Bridge of Spies (2015, D: Spielberg; W: Coen Bros.) S: Tom Hanks

There's very little about this film that I don't like so far.

Steven Spielberg
Tom Hanks
Cold War script by the Coen Bros.
Amy Ryan
John Williams
Alan Alda

I haven't like many of Spielberg's recent efforts but this one sounds like a winner to me.

I'm always down for a Spielberg film (even his newer stuff) so I'm pretty excited about this one. Definitely has a lot of factors that make it sound pretty interesting.

Looking forward to this. I've enjoyed almost every collaboration between Hanks and Spielberg (yes, even THE TERMINAL!).

I guess it's fitting that a movie about the U2 spy plane incident will have Bono's daughter in it.

Is this going directly against Crimson Peak? If so, it seems GDT just can't catch a good release date .

October is kind of odd. It makes sense for a horror flick like Crimson Peak, but it's odd for a movie like this. Probably because they wanted someplace that wasn't crowded.

Spielberg without John Williams is odd. Not a great trailer, but say this for Spielberg, he's pushing 70, and he remains nothing if not eclectic.
