"Rise of the Legend" (2014) D: Roy Chow; S: Peng Yuyan, Sammo Hung

RISE OF THE LEGEND, a new movie about legendary martial artist Wong Fei Hung, is coming from Hong Kong and China, with Universal Pictures involved. Looks like they're going to try and market it in the west, according to Variety:

Wong Fei Hung (1847-1924) was played by Jackie Chan in the fanciful kung fu comedies, DRUNKEN MASTER, SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW and DRUNKEN MASTER II, but he's more famous in the west for having been played by Jet Li in the Once Upon a Time in China film series.

Cool. Anytime Asian cinema gets exposure in the West, I'm happy.

Also, I believe the Weinstein company is currently filming the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon right now as well. I think that has a tentative 2015 release date.

Usually when it does, it gets hacked up six ways to Sunday & rescored.

I would love it if all the currently alive actors who have ever played Wong Fei Hung did a huge martial arts epic together.

When's Donnie Yen playing him?

Donnie Yen played Wong Fei Hung's father in IRON MONKEY (1993); I think that's the closest he ever came. An actress played the adolescent Fei Hung in that one. (That actress, Sze-Man Tsang, aka Angie Tsang, was an accomplished martial artist since childhood and is now a cop in Hong Kong.)

Looks too stylized. should've stuck with the gritty look of OUATIC and Iron Monkey.
that hollywood reporter quote feels a bit...forced.

"WONG FEI HUNG has been brought to screens countless times...[from] TSUI HARK and JET LI...[to] JACKIE CHAN."

I wonder what a real biopic about Wong Fei Hung would like, one that was as historically accurate as possible. Probably wouldn't have a single kung fu fight in it. It would probably be closer to THE STORY OF LOUIS PASTEUR, MADAME CURIE or DR. EHRLICH'S MAGIC BULLET, more about medical work than anything else.

Of course he dramatized things for the movies, but director Lau Kar Leung learned martial arts from his teacher, who was a student of Lam Sai Wing (movie made about him called Magnificent Butcher), who was an actual student of Wong Fei Hung. So he really wasn't too far removed from the historical figure and his martial arts methods. (His movie Challenge of the Masters specifically dealt with that).

This movie was actually already released on BD in Hong Kong last February.

It's roughly $27 and change plus shipping. It's a 2D and 3D set.

I actually picked this up last summer, but haven't made the time to watch it yet.
