John Sayles Best Movie?

Just curious as to what everyone thinks of Johns Sayles distinguished filmography and what your favorite is. I'm assuming Eight Men Out will win, but there are many gems that I really enjoy. Thoughts?

I enjoy many of his films, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be Lone Star.

The Secret of Roan Inish. Limbo would be a close second.

He has a lot of good movies, but Men With Guns is the one that stuck with me the most, so I can't vote (since there's no other option).

From the ones you listed, it would be Lone Star.

I struggled between Lone Star and Brother from Another planet but finally decided on Brother simply because it's so unique.

yeah....i had to leave out Limbo, Men With guns, and Lianna - they only offer ten options...well, i didn't HAVE to leave out those particular three, but I haven't seen Limbo or Lianna, and MWG put me to sleep so they got the axe

Matewan is absolutely amazing, giving an honest and accurate portrayal of West Virginia during the coal wars. It's rare to see anyone moving beyond the stereotypes surrounding the area and its people.

Eight Men Out was great too.

I've enjoyed all his movies, excepting Men w/ Guns which I have not seen. My fave is Limbo followed by Roan Inish and Lone Star.

Sadly, Sales is a much underappreciated director.

Matewan and City of Hope are my two faves, with about five others really close behind...

I had to pick Sayles' masterpiece Lone Star. Eight Men Out is a distinguished if distant second.

Secret of Roan Inish for me. I don't think I've ever seen another movie where EVERYTHING---cinematography, story, casting, performances, music, dialogue, pacing---was on the same page, moving in the same direction and mutually reinforcing each other as much as this one.

Athough there is probably nothing worse than watching bad, hammy child actors, a really good acting performance from a child can be unique and really amazing, like it was in this one, IMO.

I have only seen about half of the movies listed, but my pick would definitely be Lone Star.

Sadly, I doubt it. Far too few people know this film, even people from West Virginia who you think would have some emotional investment in the history and storyline.

I picked MATEWAN

Also think that LIMBO is one of his two or three best.

BTW, I was an extra in the first scene of Eight Men Out.

cheers, Tony Block

Re: John Sayles Best Movie?

Bringing a thread back from the land beyond time...

Anyways, I saw John Sayles tonight who was presenting his film "Go For Sisters," and he talked about the movie and answered questions afterwards. Really personable, intelligent, interesting guy to listen to. Also loved the movie, which I missed when it came out in 2013:

Re: John Sayles Best Movie?

I met him at SXSW when he screened Men With Guns. He really was a very nice guy, easy to talk to. Surprising bit he said was that he knew zero English when he wrote the movie. He learned as he wrote it.

Favorite of mine is Lone Star.
