Doctor Strange (2016, D: Derrickson) S: Cumberbatch

Scott Derrickson has been tapped to helm Doctor Strange as part of Marvel's Phase Three:

Scott Derrickson is set to direct “Doctor Strange” for Marvel, which is including the first as part of its bold Phase Three plan, an individual familiar with the superhero movie has told TheWrap.

Marvel has been searching for a director to replace Edgar Wright on “Ant-Man” but already made its choice with regard to “Doctor Strange,” which follows a former neurosurgeon who protects Earth from magical and mystical threats.

The character was first introduced to Marvel comics readers in 1963, and he has interacted with Spider-Man, Nick Fury and the Fantastic Four over the years. In fact, “Steven Strange” was referenced in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

Kevin Feige is producing the film, which will be executive produced by Louis D'Esposito and Stan Lee, among others.

Derrickson, whose directing credits include “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” “Sinister” and the upcoming Eric Bana thriller “Deliver Us From Evil,” is represented by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

I hope they get Edgar Ramirez to play Dr. Strange.

Should be a much easier sell to GA's than Ant-Man.

I really hope they cast someone with the gravitas to play Dr. Strange - unless they totally change his origin he's meant to be someone with a fair bit of life experience on him, rather than some 22-year-old. (I hate the idea of Johnny Depp whose name always seems to come up, but frankly someone like Adrien Brody or Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones) would be awesome IMHO.)

I also hope it doesn't turn into some hard R horror movie. Doesn't need to be.

His role in Deliver Us From Evil was interesting however misguided the movie is.

I would think with Derrickson's experience with the occult, the big bad could be Dormammu, which would easily tie into the MCU.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau would also be cool as Dr. Strange.

Yep, that was my original choice like 10-15 years when they first started talking about it.

He'd be cool, too.

His performance would be mind-blowing.

A story on Bleeding Cool says Marvel is considering Jared Leto.

Before anyone makes the "too young" comment, he's 42. The same age Downey started playing Iron Man at.

Even Bana would be interesting.

That could be interesting, I could see it.

Ethan Hawke is a good choice.

Of all the directors chosen so far for Marvel films... I find this one the strangest. No pun intended.
