Re: What are your top 10 war movies?

I have Come and See on DVD from either Kino or Image. Is it oop?

Favorites include:

Mrs. Miniver
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
The Longest Day
Battle of Briton
The Thin Red Line
Drums Along the Mohawk (This John Ford film is probably the best movie about the American Revolution)

Sam Fuller alone made so many good ones it's hard to choose:
The Big Red One
The Steel Helmet
Fix Bayonets
China Gate

Re: What are your top 10 war movies?

Paths of Glory - the best depiction of the insanity of war on film. Also features several masterful performances and a brilliant ending.
Where Eagles Dare - my personal favorite silly, fun "bunch of guys on a mission" movie. I love the Bavarian setting, the ridiculous plot and the extended chase at the end.
Letters from Iwo Jima - heartbreaking, human, elegant, concise. Captures something of Japanese fanaticism during WW2 and the costs.
Saving Private Ryan - the greatest (bar none) battle scenes ever filmed. Brutal, shocking, surprising. On the face of it, this is a fairly typical war movie in the story it tells, but the impact of the details, the cinematography and the production design will probably never be equalled
Inglourious Basterds - every time I watch it, it gets better. It's really just a small collection of extended scenes. It's ridiculous like every Tarantino movie but it's hilarious, genuinely suspenseful and gives the people what they want.
The General - if only movies these days had half the visual and plot inventiveness of this silent classic. It really is a perfect jewel. Buster Keaton's straight man face is one of the greatest treasures in film history and it was never better than this movie. Also, it features (I would argue) the greatest chase scene ever filmed.
Ran - the images this film creates are some of the most powerful I've ever seen: unbelievable shots of huge armies in full period costume marching into pitched battel, the shot of the crazed lord leaving the burning castle, the opening shots of the warthog hunt. Kurosawa is justly credited as the all-time master of mise en scene, look no further than this movie for proof.
Das Boot - a justly celebrated classic. It's an epic in the best sense and the ending is really the only one that works. Also, perfectly evokes life on a cramped, disgusting sub with a bunch of different personalities. The sonar/depth charge scenes are masterpieces of suspense.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - maybe stretching the definition of "war movie", most people would call it a western. I'd argue this is really about a bunch of marginal characters trying to make a buck at the fringes of a giant war. It may be the most rewatchable movie I've seen, it's easily one of the most quotable of all time and one that most nailed Leone's particular visionary style. "Idiots... it's for you."
Master and Commander- hugely underrated near classic. A great depiction of model military leadership. You feel stuck on this tiny wooden boat throughout the film with this terrifying force out stalking you. I love this movie.

Edit: you can stick Patton in here as well, obviously.
