Re: Sicario (2015) D: Villeneuve S: Blunt, Del Toro

Posted by me elsewhere:

Sicario--89pts. A tale of drug cartels and American agents set in locations in the Arizona and Mexico full of action and covered up alliances. Excellent acting by Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and--the nice to see back-- Benicio Del Toro. Much better than Traffic as a film and showing the absurdity of the "war on drugs." Excellent photography by Roger Deakins, including very special night scenes. Very interesting sound track by Jóhann Jóhannsson makes interesting use of solo cello.

Ultimately there's something hollow about the film which holds it back from greatness.

Will probably see this tonight after work. The Martian will have to wait until Monday I think.

Howard Stern was gushing over this during his interview with Emily Blunt this week. I think I am going to check this out next week.

I just got back from seeing this, and wholeheartedly agree with this part. The overall sound design was just phenomenal here.

Just got back from seeing it. Pretty awesome movie. Very dark and gritty FBI/Revenge thriller than an action movie. Some pretty tense scenes, especially when they went to Juarez. The overall tone of it feels like Traffic. Loved Del Toro's character. He carried the last 1/3 of the movie. He was pretty badass. I'd be game for another movie with him.

I see it's at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Glad I checked it out this afternoon.

Great fucking movie. I was more entertained by The Martian but I liked this one more.

Very tense in certain locations ie... fucking Ciudad Juarez, the to and from it. Benecio del Toro. Fuckin' A. Once you see the layers of information peel off of that guy. The better that character becomes. That was a fucking great performance. Great cast. All around. Grade A game. Deakins. Jesus... that man has very little competition in this world. Chivo and Doyle, those two along w/ Deakins.... that's a trio of beautiful imagery, man. Visually it was a gorgeous film. The way the colors move on the characters, the pacing. The music, so wonderfully restrained and controlled. Great storytelling by Villeneuve. We know so little about everything. All our information unfolds as it goes. Which only stresses the situation. And then that last 3rd. Right when you find out what kind of game you're really in. Fucking great.

You think you're dropped in one person's world and then you find out you're only along for the ride cuz somebody else is the real meat and potatoes of the whole thing.

Saw it. I think the genius of this movie lies more in storytelling technique than the story itself. The cinematography was superb, and Benicio brought his game like never before. I am kind of curious as to whether or not

Spoiler:
Emily Blunt's character is the lead or if it is actually del Toro. The story is told from her POV, but it seemed to me it was his story that was being told. Of course in the final act he is the main character, no doubt about it.

Blunt introduces the world and the situation. The other solidifies what the situation is and why it's being done. I think she's the question of whole film while BDT is the answer to it. It's shared thing, I think. Nobody talked about it but the way the film presents is like that. It's very split down to what we fall into.

Holy shit, what an intense experience. There were a handful of scenes in this movie where I felt I couldn't breathe while watching. Now that's great film making. No question, this is one of 2015's very best. And if it doesn't get a Best Picture nomination (at the very least), then Hollywood sucks more than I think it does.

Movie was definitely topnotch... It has some very intense scenes. I love all that CIA/FBI/DEA stuff, and have zero problem if we cross a line to get to the bad guys. This movie showed that line and it was awesome. Benecio was just plan amazing, can't wait to add this to my BD collection.

While I don't know how many people here have Netflix, I would highly recommend the series "Narcos" to fans of this movie. While not meant as a companion piece, it portrays many of the events alluded to in Sicario.

Just got back from seeing this and it's my #2 favorite film of the year. Totally buried Black Mass and The Martian in terms of entertainment factor for me.

Roger Deakins is on a role - the cinematography was outstanding and Villeneuve has crafted another fine feature.

Honestly, I think her character was more of a

Re: Sicario (2015) D: Villeneuve S: Blunt, Del Toro

Saw the movie today and blew me away. Best movie of 2015 hands down. Deserves Oscars on all points. Superb acting, direction, cinematography and soundtrack. Deakins did an incredible job and the night scenes are amazingly well done. The score was scary good. Really fit the scenes, especially the journey into and out if Juarez. Jeez that whole scene was incredible. Emily Blunts character really was just a tool in this movie for the job to get done officially, but actually totally unofficially. She was a means to an end for the crew. Del Toro was awesome, and Josh Brolin who I usually don't care for was really good. The Blade Runner sequel is in great hands. Johannason could step great into Vangelis role for scoring the movie. Gonna see this movie again this week.

What an intense fucking film. Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy and now Sicario. Denis Villeneuve just solidified his status as one of the best directors out there. The man is no joke. Shit I've got to get my hands on Un 32 Aout Sur Terre, Maelstrom & Polytechnique.

4.5/5

"In the original script, the character explained his background several times to Kate," Del Toro says. "And that gave me information about who this guy was, but it felt a little stiff to have someone you just met 15 minutes ago suddenly telling you what happened to him and who he is." Working with director Denis Villeneuve, Del Toro began cutting some of his dialogue to preserve the mystery of who his character is; Villeneuve estimates they cut 90 percent of what Del Toro was originally intended to say by screenwriter Taylor Sheridan. Like Del Toro, Villeneuve saw power in stripping the character down to a brooding silence, stating that dialogue belongs to plays and "movies are about movement, character, and presence, and Benicio had all that."
