Not sure how reliable this site is, but they claim a source informed them that Maslany got the part (and that she may have resigned from a play she was going to be in because of it). Still just a rumor, but I hope it pans out. :fc:

Yea I heard the news about the play (because I was interested in seeing it), and immediately thought the same thing.

If anyone deserves for recognition, it's her.

Tatiana DID pull out of her play, so that's a pretty good sign she got cast.

There's also a rumor about Fassbender playing Boba Fett - but that that with a HUGE grain of salt.

Cumberbatch could take off his helmet, look straight into the camera and say "I AM BOBA FETT.""

Cue ominous music.

'Star Wars' Stand-alone Movie to Star Felicity Jones (Exclusive)
10:47 AM PST 2/3/2015 by Borys Kit

After a series of hush-hush readings and tests, Lucasfilm and Disney have zeroed in on Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones for the female lead in the Star Wars stand-alone film.

Jones is now in talks to star in the project, which Gareth Edwards is directing and Chris Weitz — who was just hired last week — is writing. Weitz is replacing Gary Whitta, who penned the first draft.
Actresses were meeting, reading and testing last week in Los Angeles for the role, with Tatiana Maslany and Rooney Mara among those in the mix.

The secrecy surrounding the project is thicker than the mists of Dagobah, and it is even unclear which character the stand-alone is focusing on. Sources say that Aaron Paul and Edgar Ramirez are on the interest list for the male lead.

Disney had no comment.

The movie has a release date of Dec. 16, 2016.

Jones is currently making the awards season rounds for The Theory of Everything, for which she snagged a best actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Jane Hawking, the first wife of physicist Stephen Hawking.

True Story, in which she stars with James Franco and Jonah Hill, just premiered at Sundance, and she is also shooting A Monster Calls, a family fantasy directed by J.A. Bayona that also stars Liam Neeson and Toby Kebbell.

She is repped WME.

There isn't a lot I can buy him in outside of BB. He's a Norman Reedus type - great in his signature role, but not so much in anything else.

Wonder what this female character will be like? Will she get to kick ass? I was kind of pulling for the Orphan Black chick. Hopefully Jones was the best choice for the role and didn't just beat out the others because she has Oscar heat at the moment.

The Wrap also mentioned Mackenzie Davis was a finalist. She (like most of the actresses who tested) has that doe-eyed waif look that I associate with a runway model.

re: Rogue One - Star Wars spinoff (12/16/16) D: Gareth Edwards

Tatiana is supposed to be playing Sabine Wren (from REBELS)...so there's a chance that the spin-off will have BOTH her and Felicity Jones in it. I can't imagine Sabine is the main character.

joe_b 02-03-15 02:40 PM

re: Rogue One - Star Wars spinoff (12/16/16) D: Gareth Edwards

^ I think the Sabine thing is some fanboy's wishful thinking. The same "source" claimed Fassbender was playing Boba Fett, which sounds like complete BS. MakingStarWars also posted that they'd heard Maslany has been out of the running since last week -- so she and Jones were likely up for the same role.

re: Rogue One - Star Wars spinoff (12/16/16) D: Gareth Edwards

This morning at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, across the street from Lucasfilm, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting where he announced news regarding the first Star Wars stand-alone movie as well as Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

Rogue One...

A Rogue Squadron movie?

There were some Rogue Squadron EU novels that were surprisingly pretty good. Probably some of the best of the EU.

Exciting stuff. Some EU fans are hoping they get Michael Stackpole back.

So safe to say Jones will play an X-Wing pilot?

Now give me a Roque Squadron game, dammit!

I don't know how to feel about this. On one hand I think it's wise to avoid trying to develop Obi-Wan or Boba Fett. On the other hand, I've personally never had any desire to learn about X-Wing pilots and how they got to where they are. Maybe TFA will further develop some key characters.

The Rogue Squadron books were AWESOME. It would have made a great TV series but I'll gladly see it on the big screen.

Rogue One COULD have a double meaning. It could be both about an X-Wing pilot and about a character himself/herself (as it "he/she's sure a rogue one.")

Who do we know that's sort of rogue...you know, a scoundrel? ;)

This could be decent although I'm not sure how interesting a film based around Rebel pilots will be. I'm sure there's more to it than just that though so I guess we'll see what happens.

You probably have a better chance of Disney hiring you to write a draft of this thing than a novelist with no screen credits has.

Perhaps it's not about X-Wing pilots.... perhaps her story takes place earlier and the squad is named after her... just brainstorming.

Re: Star Wars: Rogue One (12/16/16, D: Gareth Edwards) S: Felicity Jones

I meant bring Stackpole back as a novelist. Earlier this week they announced Star Wars: Aftermath - the synopsis:

The second Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are rumored to be dead. The Galactic Empire is in chaos.

Across the galaxy, some systems celebrate, while in others Imperial factions tighten their grip. Optimism and fear reign side by side.

And while the Rebel Alliance engages the fractured forces of the Empire, a lone Rebel scout uncovers a secret Imperial meeting...
No author announced yet. I wonder if this could be a Rogue One story.

Or judging by the Rogue Squadron novels written by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston, it could be interesting.

People say things like they want a Star Wars movie that doesn't revolve around Skywalker or Jedi/Sith. Now that we are apparently getting a movie like that people are saying it doesn't sound interesting. People are -screwy-.

I think it'll be fine and I know the Rogue Squadron series of novels were popular with some (I never read any so I can't say one way or the other) just to me reading the description it wasn't what I expected them to do right away I guess and doesn't get me overly excited. I'll see it and who knows it could be awesome I just expected something different to be announced. I guess generally I'm not a big fan of films that are largely based around fighters or take place largely in ships so if the way someone compared it to Top Gun in space is accurate I'm not terribly enthused about it. I'm sure that's not entirely what the film will be though so who knows I could be wrong and enjoy it.

I never actually read the Rogue Squadron novels either, but I have always seen them mentioned along with the Thrawn trilogy as being the best of the EU.

I do know that the Rogue Squadron novels are set only a couple years after the battle of Endor, so they are chronologically the earliest stories in the "New Republic" era. I know that the EU isn't canon with the new movies, but maybe the movie will be something similar to this. It could act as a bridge between the OT and the ST by explaining some things that have happened in the 30 years between ROTJ and TFA. Maybe we will see Rogue Squadron take back Coruscant after the death of the Emperor or something like that.
