The Cinefamily thread

You know, why the hell not.

This is my local revival theater where they show tons of flicks in 35mm and various other formats, etc. They have marathons and they also host special events. I was here over the weekend for Herzog's Nosferatu and I will be there again this weekend for Herzog's Fata Morgana.

I thought I'd start this thread to show off what will be playing locally in the L.A./Hollywood area at Cinefamily. It's a really neat theater and the prices are right! I just got my tickets for Videodrome next month (in 35mm) and am thinking about attending their Steven Seagal marathon (next month) of: Hard To Kill, Under Siege 2, Out For Justice, and On Deadly Ground. All four will be presented in 35mm.

The following week after the Seagal marathon they're showing Pump Up The Volume also in 35mm

EDIT - Mods, if this belongs somewhere else then feel free to move it there. Thanks.

I like Cinefamily but rarely go there. Part of that is due to time constraints, but the parking can be a bitch sometimes and I don't like the seats, unless you can grab a couch up front.

When was the last time you were there? They updated the seats and got new couches. They also let you reserve couches online when you buy a ticket for an extra $5.

They opened up free parking across the street at the school. There's always plenty available when I've gone.

Re: The Cinefamily thread

The last time I went was actually a while ago, so I might like the facilities more now.

L. A. gets all the cool stuff. Wonder how trashed those Segal prints will be though? I projected On Deadly Ground and Under Siege 2 to mostly empty theaters during their first run. I loved how On Deadly Ground had some footage at the end printed normally, but appeared stretched out projected with a scope lens since that's how the rest of the movie was shot. They were ahead of their time there! :)

Don't know, but that On Deadly Ground print is being shipped from the UK for this show.

Been wanting to check this out for a while but not living in L.A. makes it a little hard. Maybe one day.

hanshotfirst1138 05-20-14 02:49 PM

I can't imagine 35mm prints of Segal films are in high demand, to be honest.

I did get my Videodrome tickets but haven't jumped on the Seagal ones yet. I did pre-register for their members only special screening of 22 Jump Street June 11th. The directors will be there in person premiering the film. That should be fun if I can get in since it's being billed as a "first come first serve" type of event even with membership. I also just noticed that they extended Jodorowski's Dune for a few more shows into next week. I still haven't seen that one, so I may make a trip for it.

Re: The Cinefamily thread

Any interest in including Cinespia showings in this thread as well? Not sure it warrants its own thread, but might be of interest to those of us in the L.A. area looking for unique movie experiences.

For the unfamiliar: Cinespia has weekend outdoor shows of popular films at the Hollywood Forever cemetery in L.A.

Went to my first one a few months ago--a showing of American Werewolf in London--and had a blast. Newcastle was giving away free beer samples, Elijah Wood DJ'd the before and after parties, a fun photo booth (my fiancé and I were in costume as Nurse Alex and David), and lawn seating perfect for a picnic. Just bought tix for June 7's showing of Swingers. (Jaws and Almost Famous are both sold out for this upcoming weekend. There's a showing of the original Texas Chainsaw at the end of June, which should be fun.)

(If there's no interest in discussing Cinespia in this thread, my apologies for the threadjack!)

Yeah, go for it. I've never been to one of those at the cemetery, because too many idiots running about in the crowds. I do dig the concept, though.

Easily avoided if you sit near the front, although then you have to work up the courage to stand up and walk in front of and through a couple thousand people seated on the grass to get to the bathrooms. Still, a super fun vibe and surprisingly good picture and sound.

Props to the programmer there. ON DEADLY GROUND and UNDER SIEGE 2: DARK TERRITORY are Seagal's best films (along with ABOVE THE LAW). I'd definitely pay to see them on the big screen again.

I'm so glad I got my tickets for the show!

THIS JUST IN: Werner Herzog has just confirmed with us that he'll be appearing in person for a lengthy intro to tomorrow's 9:50pm show of Fata Morgana! Tickets going fast...

Since I didn't want to start a new thread I thought I'd throw this bit of info. The Pasadena ArcLight Cinemas will be showing Robocop in all it's UNRATED glory as part of their "ArcLight Presents" series. It's Thursday June 19th and here is the response I got back from their media rep:

Sorry for the delay in response. We've been waiting to hear back from the filmmakers for the most accurate answer. This is a new 4k restoration supervised by Paul Verhoeven and is considered the unrated version with an additional 30+ seconds.

I'm so fucking there.

It was fucking amazing. Herzog was there in person and he talked to us for like 20 minutes before leaving. Apparently he's still working on post for his latest film.

Fata Morgana was a DCP version and it looked fucking stellar, so here's hoping the Blu-ray retains that same quality the DCP had. It was surreal.

Every interview with Herzog I've seen has never failed to be fascinating, intelligent, and frequently hilarious. I'd imagine he's the same in Q&As.

He is. Very smart and hysterical. We were rolling at some of his tales.

Wish I lived in L.A. so I could check the place out. I would probably even volunteer some time.
