I have not clicked on that trailer but they switched out SWS for Johnny Knoxville? I don't think Chan's been a draw out here since maybe Shanghai Noon/Knights. Shanghai Knights was the last good film of his that I remember.

Re: Skiptrace -- (S: Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville, D: Renny Harlin)

So this came out on demand yesterday on Directv, so I went ahead and rented it. I'm a Jackie fan and haven't seen any really solid work from him in years. Very hefty $10.99 rental for 3 days. I'm sure most of this forum would refuse to pay that much for a rental. But, since this is still playing in Asia and doesn't hit theatres here until September, I'll look at this as paying a matinee price.

Anyways, I thought it was just okay. A decent effort, but only a 1-time watch. Definitely watchable with some humor and better than some of Jackie's recent efforts. Initially I thought he and Knoxville would be a terrible pairing, but they surprisingly had chemistry. I would say this is a mix of Shanghai Noon, Rush Hour and a little of the Odd Couple. Goofy in spots, some clumsy action scenes, but it somehow had some charm to it. You could tell that Jackie has slowed down a lot. He doesn't have the quickness and power in his fight scenes. His moves are noticeably slower. There's a few name Hong Kong actors in it like Eric Tsang and Michael Wong (brother of Russell Wong and a pretty big long-time star in HK).

Language-wise it's about 70% English and 30% Mandarin. Strangely Jackie is a Hong Kong cop, but interacts with his colleagues in English and speaks to other Chinese characters in Mandarin. I just found that odd. Aside from the U.S. market, I guess this was mainly intended for the mainland China audience where Jackie is still a draw. Hell, this opened to $62M over there.

There's a big twist at the end, although it's quite predictable.

I'll give this between a B- and C+. A moderate recommendation if you're a Jackie fan. Movie runs about 107 minutes and comes out in wider on demand release in September. There is a blooper reel during the end credits, which is a regular part of most of Jackie's movies.

This is mighty nice of you. God knows Jackie needs all that he can get now these days. I'm not as generous. I watched a pirated copy.

That's funny because that's exactly what I noticed too. Even the speed he climbed ladders is noticeably slower. He's in his 60's so it's totally understandable.

Actually, there is lot more oddity than that. Mongolians don't even speak Chinese. Technically, it's near impossible for either of the main lead to be able cross Russia, Mongolia, Hong Kong and Mainland to have no problem communicating whatsoever. I guess we just suppose to pretend there is an universal language where this story take place.

If this is anywhere near as good as Renny Harlin's last film, I'm in!

for some reason reason, I don't really remember who the fuck SuperJim88 is and he's suspended. Ah. He called Leslie Jones a gorilla. That's why.

on topic....

I'm not sure how I feel about Chan anymore. the more I see of his newer stuff the sadder it is.

I don't think he would worry too much about it since he is worth over $300 million.

I'm gonna skip this one unless it shows up on HBO or regular cable.

Re: Skiptrace -- (S: Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville, D: Renny Harlin)

It's not terrible and there are some really good looking female chinese actresses in it

But compared to other Jackie movies, it's pretty poor. Jackie has understandedly slowed down and it really is very noticeable. His stunts and fight scenes are not crisp anymore and seem really labored.

Knoxville again is not terrible, but he's not A or B List either

Re: Skiptrace -- (S: Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville, D: Renny Harlin)

Now... Chan is probably more athletic than the best of us here but he's also old. His body can only go far. I'm pretty sure if they actually sat down and figured it. They can make it work in showing him do a lot of things w/o wirework and still make it amazing. It's just a whole different dance though. I'd take the risk on that. Changing it up for the sake of making it feel real. Now Chan's work looks hokey for the most part. They need to change it up. Chan is still trying to make his characters move like the ones of his past golden eras. He can't do that anymore.
