I was looking forward to this, but does every friggin' movie nowadays have to be so dark and rainy and smoky and foggy and dreary. Why do so many modern directors seem to hate color?

Godzilla is about a giant monster destroying a city, serving as a metaphor for nuclear annihilation. If any movie should look dark and dreary, it's Godzilla.

Why the Debussy music over the trailer? If their Mothra imagery was as lyrical as this film's (REBIRTH OF MOTHRA, 1996), I wouldn't complain:

Let me rephrase it, then: the CGI dark skies, clouds, smoke, fog and rain that modern directors use to create their "dark" atmosphere generally look terrible and cheap to me.

Nothing will top the original but all we have to judge so far is promotional material. Filmmakers use the tools available to them, context and suspension of disbelief allow for immersion in the story. Anybody can notice the seams if they want to focus on them. But in terms of directors hating color, any good Godzilla film should look apocalyptic.

That's a legitimate opinion. I'm an old-school Toho fan who loves the original Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah films, and most of the Godzilla sequels, so that's where I'm coming from in my preference for colorful films in this genre. And it's also one of the reasons I liked Kong: Skull Island so much.

What a gorgeous trailer. Seeing all my favorite monsters so lovingly and faithfully brought to life was unexpectedly moving.

I can appreciate that. I grew up watching the sequels dubbed on television. The thing is that we've had decades of the campy portrayal so I'm pleased that Godzilla(2014) and King of the Monsters have returned to the dark roots of the original. That shot of the city on fire from the original is just so iconic to me. I liked Kong, too, but I'm apprehensive about the crossover because the tone of the two films were so different.

A lot of the time, it obscures any flaws in the CGI. A CGI creature against a bright, sunny sky is a lot harder to render well.

Yep, I suspect that's part of it. And I don't mean to harsh on this movie after one trailer--the heavy, dark CGI backgrounds in modern film are just a pet peeve of mine in general. I didn't like the look of Solo: A Star Wars Story, or Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman, to some extent even going back to Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. To me, it brings a cartoonish vibe to the movie, and it doesn't carry the cinematic "weight" of natural backgrounds, if that makes sense. It's just a modern film aesthetic that I don't care for.

Not starting a crusade here, just my personal opinion.

Dougherty tweeted to "expect more monster surprises" in the film, so we may be seeing even more classic cameos.

If it’s anything like the last movie, I’m not expecting those monsters to show up until the final 15 minutes.

Test screenings have said to expect around 40 minutes of monster action throughout. Better?

For those who do not know the piece it is entitled "Clair de lune."

That last shot of the military fighter jets having Godzilla’s back = all sorts of awesome. I need an HD background for my PC ASAP...

And wife seemed impressed with Mothra's glowy wing spread, but she’ll wait until she can watch it on our home theater. She tolerates my Kaiju obsession...
